Evening all,
Trying to get a classic two stroke started but strggling.
Got a spark, got fuel & got compresssion but just wont fire.
Any tips? Is it safe to use easy start on a two stroke to get it running?
Thanks!

Ensure:

  • The fuel is fresh
  • That the mix is about right
  • That the spark is timed as per spec (and not 180 degrees out)
  • That the spark plug is as per spec and in good nick (without a carbon wire across electrodes)
  • If that fails, think about changing crank-case seals

If its cold I use full choke and three kicks, if that doesn't do it then turn off ignition and open the throttle whilst kicking it over another 3 times, then try again.

They can flood easily so that's my method, never failed yet

when was it last run , carb needs a clean and is there suction on the back of the carb if not could point to the crank seals

There might be compression but you also need crank seals to be good so the vacuum created by the escaping exh gases draws in fresh fuel rather than just fresh air

Knowing what it is would help??

Try taking out the spark plug and heating up the electrode with a blow torch, get it back in the barrel quickly, twist the throttle a couple of times and try to start again. :rob

I remember after a long period of inactivity an old gt500 of mine would not start , there was a crankcase drain plug NOT THE GEARBOX ONE, once opened a load of oil and stale fuel ran out and the bike started easily

2 stroke

Spark plugs get oiled up
If it's not run for a while
Try fresh fuel
Clean spark plug/s and warm with a blow lamp
If it doesn't start on the kick start
Get pushing bump it off:thumb

Thanks fellas,
Its a peugeot sx80 bought of this site. Natty little ex-french army thing. I'll try all the advice and get back to you all (& I wont use easy start!)

I used to warm the plug on my AP50, worked every time.

Take the plug out and make sure its clean , no carbon whiskers across the electrode. (assuming you have a gas stove or blow torch) warm it up for appx 15 to 20 secs in flame. Pop it back in, fuel on,choke on ,ignition on , kill switch off dont touch the throttle. Kick it over. If after 5 or 6 kicks nothing happens just give it a wiff of throttle.

Good luck

Steve
