Getting into gear

Hellooo there. I have at long last just got hold of my first ever RT and am loving the advice and pics on here. However I already have had a few issues that have been resolved but were still annoying.

One issue I am having is getting it into first. some times I try and out it into 1st and the lever has no function. It just goes up and down. I pull in and release the clutch, roll it back and forth and such which is annoying and embarrassing at traffic lights. Any suggestions? I have heard a few things about transmission issues and rebuilds and that worries me, could this be related.

Press down on the gear lever while slow releasing the clutch and it should drop into first gear.

Aha, perfect cheers. Is they normal then? Not had to do it on any other bike.

They can be a bit finnicky. My last RT did it & my new GSA is exactly the same. Once you've developed 'the knack' you'll have no problems.

Ok great thanks. As long as it isn't a fault that's good news. Thanks for the wishes. Loving the bike so far. Looking forward to a nice road trip next year. Weathers been poo since I got it so not had a chance to really learn how it feels.

I'm after a genuine tankbag if anyone has one laying around.

Don't worry about the weather. It's an RT - you'll not notice the wind/cold/rain.

Mine is just the same, particularly noticeable when cold but not solely, as schtum said.........works every time!

I think it's all part of the "character" thing. I have rode three 1200RT's and the gearboxes all felt different. My latest being the worst. I have found that stripping, cleaning and greasing the shift lever ball joints greatly improves the "feeling" at the pedal.

Try 75w/90 semi-synthetic gear oil, a guy named Mick Barr who rebuilt BMW gear boxes used it all the time
