For some unknown reason the maps on my Nav 5 were more up-to-date than the maps on my Mac, running Basecamp. How this happened I do not know as I cannot recall updating the maps on the device.

Opening Basecamp drew the latest maps across from the Nav V, which is fine, but would delete them them just as soon as I ejected the device, as is normal. As I like running the Mac without the GPS device attached I had to find an answer.

Garmin Express was no help. It simply said that my maps were up-to-date, with no option to re-install the newly updated map into just my Mac.

My Garmin was no help, it simply told me again that my maps were up-to-date.

Garmin MapInstall and Garmin MapManager didn't seem to offer any assistance.

This website though did hold the answer…

The odd thing is that it seems to be going incredibly slowly, on what should be a very fast connection. Maybe the whole of London is out of the rain and streaming twaddle.

See you used Mapupdater? I'm sure with Express you could have done a map re-install to device & Mac? Have you got the latest version of Express: 2.3.7 ? :type

Always try to do mine overnight, it's quicker when you dont keep looking. :nono

It usually whistles along, two to three hours for a complete map install to a device and a computer.

The internet is creaking in London E1 this afternoon I'm afraid.

Never mind, it will do it eventually.

That's what I thought, except that I can't see where on a reinstall (as opposed to a new installation) of the maps Garmin Express gives gives you the option to chose to download to the computer, instead of the device.

In my (troubled) experience, Map Upater is a lot slower at download the maps than Garmin Express. Clearly, the speed of your connection is important, but i have downloaded the updates in two and bit hours with Garmin Express, but it was over 5 hours when I had to use Map Updater on another device (when the download with Express kept failing).

The latest version of Garmin Express for Mac is 2.3.8 (not 2.3.7 as noted in an earlier post). The latest version seems better than earlier versions, but is still not infallible/foolproof.

I suppose you have clicked the advanced button? sorry for telling you how to suck eggs.

I'm happy to suck eggs, I assure you.

Garmin Express is fair thundering along (compared with MapUpdater) back to the usual 2 to three hours for a full install I hope. But the internet is really slooooooow, a big Mac machine spooling just to load a UTube clip whilst Express runs in the background.

I didn't see an advanced button option. I went looking for that or something that gave me an option of where to make the reinstall to, but no. All I got was an advice that the map would have to be reinstalled to the device's SD card. Did I miss something? I hope not I will have to do it again.

How can I tell which version of Garmin Express I am running?

Thanks to all for help.

Richard

Click on express in top left corner & choose about. I think. At work at present so cannot check. If it wont update just re-install the app, worked for me :blagblah

Aha, all gone very slllllllloooooow again. Never mind, it will do its stuff.

I have though discovered I am running version 2.1.8 (62) which is odd, as the update function was telling me that everything is up to date. I'll update it all when and if the maps finish witting themselves to an SD card that was happy before I started.

Hey-ho.

Hey-ho.

Just updated Express on my Mac to Version 2.3.8 (73) Downloaded from Garmin site. you can find the update button in the "About Garmin Express window" (check for application updates) where you can see the version.

I wonder why its chosen the sd card when your device has a big hard drive compared to the IV?

Now that was what I was wondering.

We shall see.

I'm in no hurry to use the device, so I'll wait for it to finish and fiddle about again sometime in the week, starting with the Express update.

Many thanks to everyone for the help.

Richard

Well, it reloaded all the latest maps into the Nav V, which works. As I suspected, it left the map un-updated and one issue behind on my Mac.

I'll download the new version of Express tonight and see what happens then.

I think I may have triumphed.

I couldn't find any way of Garmin Express automatically updating itself to its latest version or doing it manually. Following the advice from iand46, I deleted the app and downloaded it afresh. So far so good, the app appearing in my Mac's 'Launch' panel. I plugged in my Nav V and its two drives appeared, so far so good again. Garmin Express launched, all on its own. So far so good, for the third time....

Uh, oh.... Garmin Express won't find the device.... So I Googled 'Garmin Express won't find device Mac'.... Up popped a whole heap of suggestions, so I followed the one to Garmin's own website and followed its instructions to the letter.... Still nothing....

I then remembered the time honoured method for mending all devices (irrespective of complexity)... Turn them off completely, walk away, drink a cup of tea and turn them on again... Bingo! Now it works, the power of tea is without compare!

There's my device listed... And now I at last have an option to chose whether to load all future map updates to:

(1) The device only

(2) The devil AND the Mac

(3) The Mac only

The option is hidden away in very faint pale blue writing, labeled I think, 'advanced'.

Having clicked option (2) Garmin Express took over and quicker than a quick thing did its stuff.

I hope that the software now remembers that I have selected (2) as my default option, so that any future map updates load to both my device AND my Mac... I wait wait to see... It may be a three cup of tea moment.

As I also have a MacBook Air to update. I guess I will also have to repeat all the above on that computer too, but then select (3) only.

Thanks to all for help.

If you feel that you need to "reload" the Garmin Express software then this is the guidance given me by Garmin. It is NOt just a question of moving the app to the Trash, but you need to delete some other files too:

Thank you for contacting Garmin Europe.

I am happy to help you. Please open Garmin Express and click on the left top corner Garmin Express. Next click About Garmin Express and Check for software update.

This will allow you check if you have a latest version of Garmin Express for your Mac.

Please also try completely unistall garmin Express from your Mac:

On the Dock, click the Finder icon
From the menus at the top of the screen, click Go
Click Applications
Click and drag Garmin Express icon to the Trash
From the menus at the top, click Go
Click Go to folder
In the text box, type ~/Library and click OK
Open the Preferences folder
Click and drag com.garmin.renu.client.plist and com.garmin.renu.service.plist to the Trash. If a .lockfile version of the file exists throw it in the Trash as well
Navigate back to the Library folder, steps 5-7
Open the Application Support folder
Open the Garmin folder
Click and drag the Express folder to the Trash
Navigate back to the Library folder, steps 5-7
Open the Caches folder
Click and drag the com.garmin.renu.client and com.garmin.renu.service files to the Trash
Empty the Trash
Once the steps are completed, Garmin Express will be completely uninstalled.

Now please download the fresh version of Garmin Express from the link below:
