Hi all,

I've had a go at taking off the brake discs from the front wheel about 3 months ago.

I failed miserably.

Is it right that I should take a heat gun to the discs? I read something about locktite and that the heat will generate a "crack" noise and the like.

Is that right? How do you get the discs off your front wheel?

Its been doing my head in. Wheel off or on bike as you do it?

FANKS!:eek

how have you managed to fail miserably? Its just a case of undo-ing the allen bolts... have you managed to round them off? Have you taken them off but the disc is seized to the wheel???

More info please.! :)

Buy yourself a hot air gun from B&Q, heat the bolts to soften the Loctite otherwise you'll round off the boltheadss.

my nuts

They are just stuck, have not rounded the heads off yet, but need to know what I can do to avoid doing it as they are soooooo stuck.

I need an elephant to take them off, I AM in danger of rounding them oft.

I have a heat gun, but am worried about warping discs or doing something similarly daft with heat againts me wheely.

So to summerise, cant get bots out, disc still on wheel, wheel still on bike.

Pathetic I know. :monkeypiz:bounce1

I wouldn't suggest you try to do it with the wheel in:confused: .

I suggest you take the wheel out , lay it flat and have someone hold the wheel for you . This wheel allow you to put downward pressure on the driver wrench and help avoid it slipping.

I took the rear disc off my 5yr old GS last year and the bolts felt immoveable at first but I easily 'cracked' em all open in the end without any damage to the bolts. Didnt have a heat gun at my disposal but fortunately didnt need it.

Soak with WD40.
Heat with heatgun.
Impact driver and big hammer.:thumb2

I took the discs of the RT to replace the bolts. You have to heat them for AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGES.

You probably aren't giving the heat gun enough time. Don't forget that the heat has to penetrate through to where the loctite is.

If you've heated them enough they will crack pretty easily, if they don't you need to heat for longer :thumb

Replaced mine a while back, mine were dead easy & didnt need any heat to undo the loctite. Wheel off bike, lay down flat & get the correct size allen socket. Make sure the hex is right down as far as it will go & gently apply pressure constantly. Should come straight undone. Dont loose the floaty washer things either.:thumb

I do all the time. And i've never had to use any heat :nenau

Yeah but you're an expert with pro tools and with all due respect colesyboy sounds like a complete amatuer just like me. I thought he'd be less likely to damage himself or the bike with the wheel out, I was/were/did. ;)

If you have cheap keys that are a loose fit, then be careful - you may well round off the bolts. If you have some fairly decent kit with a fairly decent fit, you should be ok.

I'm a bit confused why you'd want to take the discs off with the wheel still on.. I presume the only reason to really take them off is to replace them and you cant do that with the wheel still in place... or can you?

i was just thinking the same thing.

i was just thinking the same thing.

maybe to just replace the mounting bolts due to wobbly discs.

i'm disappointed now. i thought it was magic like those blokes with the two linked rings :(

I don't bother taking the wheel or brake calipers off when i have to change discs, i just pull the spindle out and slot the new discs back :D logical magic , shazzamm

next you're going to tell us you don't have to take the wheel off to fix a puncture ;)
