Is there an easy way to get to the underside of the fuse/relay box on an 850/1100GS?

I want to wire in another relay to prevent the ABS Check from taking place until the alternator is generating to stop the ABS errors that I get on cold mornings. I'm quite happy doing the wiring, but am trying to work out how to get to the underside of the fuses so that I can splice in the lead I need to between the ABS relay.

The relays are in little caddy's that can be removed from the body of the fusebox, but they release downwards and not upwards so I still can't get to the underside.

There are 4 screws holding the top of the fusebox onto the body, but if you remove these 4 screws, you still can't remove the top as the subframe is in the way. The only way I can see to do this is to go in from underneath, remove the rear wheel and undertray and drop the bottom of the fuse-box, but that seems a bit of a pain!

Anyone got any wise words on how I can relatively easily get to the underside of the ABS relay?

Thanks

You're Doing it Right

You just need to persist to remove the top of the box through the subframe. Careful, gentle flexing will allow it to come out from between the frame tubes.

Probably works better if the plastic is warmer - I did it in summer, as I recollect (2001 R1150GS).

Good luck.:thumb2

Warmth is definitely your best buddy doing this- It can be one of those jobs that goes smoothly on the way out, then turns into a 2 hour epic swearword ridden wrestling session getting it back in, or vice versa.

If possible, take the missus' hair dryer to the plastic box and warm it thoroughly.....make sure you have some old screwdrivers and a rag for levering safely and although at some stages you won't believe it will pop out, it will :thumb2

To find an "engine running" wire you don't need to go under the fusebox. I will check when I get back home, but I am pretty sure i picked it right from one of the wires at the diagnostic plug. A whole lot easier to get to.

To interupt the power going to the ABS go to the ABS connector and find the right wire there. Again, a whole lot easier then removing the fusebox and trying to splice under it.

It's the ABS wire I want to find, I thought it'd be easier splicing it right by the relay inside the fusebox rather than taking off the tank/battery etc to get to the ABS unit connector. Maybe I'll take a look at that end too...

As said. Undo the 4 screws. Lever the lid up between the frame rails. As simple as it sounds.
