Hi guy's

I bought som Gilles adjustable foot rest's not long ago, i haven't even been off road yet and today i stood up on them doing about 35-40 mph and the left one snapped right off as i have a right artificial leg my weight was on the left side, i was "sooooo" close to hitting a dry stone wall.

I just thought i'd let you know just in case anyone on here's using them

Expensive rubbish as well, glad your OK

There is not alot of metal holding those together no wonder it snapped.
Glad you are ok and nothing worse happend.

spike

Potentially lethal if they let go at the wrong moment.
Have you let the manufacturer know ?

A peg snapping off while you're stood on it riding......that's got to be up there along with sudden complete front tyre failure in the fast lane or seagull through an open visor scenarios :eek

Sounds llike you did a good job if you managed to keep on it :thumb2

The peg LOOKS under engineered, especially considering it's aluminium....fuck that!!

EDIT.....I reckon this one needs stickying in the FOAW when it's had a few days here......that looks like a serious design flaw to me, and the consequences don't bear thinking about

If I had those on my bike, I would be taking them off immediately.:rob

Looking at that break it's been on its way for a while (maybe from day one) the area around the bolt has been cracked long enough for corrosion or dirt to contaminate it.
Bloody crap design for the material used I'd say. Looks as if it's a casting rather than billet to me.

Glad you're in one piece though:thumb2

Are you sure they were Giles, and not Chinese copies?

Casting rather than billet??

Are you sure you don't mean to compare Casting/Forging?

It's my understanding that "billet" is forged before machining as opposed to cast so same comparison in my book.

Billet is usually 'machined from solid stock'. Forged is exactly that, forged under pressure into the required form.

Classic brittle fracture by the looks of it. Poor quality material of insufficient cross section for the load applied. Hard anodising makes it look trick and improves alloy surface hardness ten thousand times, but only by a very limited depth from the outer surface.

My first thoughts were "Chinese backstreet knock-off copy". Maybe worth a call to trading standards ???

If they are Genuine Gilles, and knowing they are allegedly a reputable manufacturer, I'm sure someone will get their arses kicked and a redesign will be forthcoming.

Glad you regained control and didn't end up in A&E (or worse).

I would recommend Fastway footpegs, had them on my last GS.

I see what you mean Jez there's a discolouration in the alloy..
