I have just completed 22 yrs service in the RAF as a driver. I am trying to get a job trucking 3-4 days a week in the cleveland/teeside area , however a couple of agencies I have spoken to say I am required to have 6 months commercial experience, which obviously I do not have. I have driven all over Europe and the UK with 2 MT Squadron (Artics), I am currently famming Airman on the oldest truck in the Air Force a Seddon Atkinson with a twin splitter gear box, it can play a great tune. Is there anybody out there who can offer me employment or point me in the right direction, it would be much appreciated.

Do you have a full ADR license as well as a HGV1? If not, I'd strongly suggest you get one before you leave the Force or at least make sure the ADR is renewed before you leave to cover you for the next 5 years. It'll make you a little more attractive to prospective employers when making applications and may help you get the opening you need.

If you pay for it yourself it'll cost you a fair few £'s.

Just talked to an Agency at Google who are screaming for drivers at Sherburn in Elmet for Stobbies and Sainsbugs

If not, then try this tack. It worked for my father who got fed up being employed but did not like the way agencies treated temp drivers. Firstly, he found a local farmer who had an artic tipper. This was used seasonally to take spuds and at this time of year, sugar beet, for processing. That kept him busy for most of the autumn & winter. In spring & summer he was fully employed covering the holidays/sickness for various local firms. Eventually, he worked for 2 firms as they a) paid invoices promptly and b) phoned months ahead to book. This was great for dad as he could work whatever hours he wanted, got paid at a better rate than agencies paid and never got messed about. The farmer & 2 haulage companies liked it as they'd get a known driver who was reliable at less than the rate charged by the robbing agents. Of course, being self employed, the tax & NI dad paid was much lower than PAYE. It's amazing what a cheeky accountant can offset against tax.

You might be able to start this by offering to work a shift or two supervised by an experienced driver. Invest a bit of your time, unpaid, securing your future, as you would if going to college. This could apply if you think you would prefer to be an employee rather than freelance.
