I'm hoping somebody here has experience of using a Givi E52 maxia top box, with the surface mounted luggage rack on it?

If so, can you confirm how it's secured, (drilled and bolted, i'm guessing) and if it is a drill/bolt combination, does anybody know if there are any issues with the top box remaining watertight????

I'm about to embark on a two-up run down to south west France for a week camping, needless to say, space is at a premium and i'm looking at this rack as an option, but have concerns over box remaining watertight....

all help appreciated..

i can help

I have one on mine. Been there for about 3 years or so and is brilliant for securing locks, waterproofs and other small stuff. Like you said, bolted thro and made watertight with small rubber washer type things. never leaked in all the time i have been using it and have been in some downpours.

Hope this helps

Great news, just what was i hoping cheers.....

One other question, i'm planning to vacuum pack two sleeping bags, then stuff them in an Ortlieb drypack... then mount that up there, although it'll look quite large in size up there, i'm working on the basis that the physical weight is low, and therefore should not cause me problems up high....

do you see any glaring issues with that plan, based on your experience with the rack?

thanks again for your help...

Givi rack

The trouble with vac bagging a sleeping bag and mounting on the topbox rack is where do you carry the Hoover to repack the sleepingbag to get home again !!!

Just bought one yesterday. I'm going to do the same as I did when fitting the back rest last week, a blob of clear silicone/mastic sealant on the bolt thread before screwing into rack. This should ensure no leaks.

As for the silicone sealant (Steve B) thats an idea i had toyed with, and think i'll be going ahead with also, just took delivery of the rack today, so once mounted (Monday) i'll have more idea, probably post a pic or two if anyone is interested?

Cheers again guys.... power to the people and all that :D
