Hi, i'm looking to add a Givi E52 Maxia to my GS12 alongside my BMW OEM Panniers.....

Any thoughts? Anyone with same setup got good/bad experiences?

And does anybody have any good places to buy? I can't seem to find any cheaper than £170 for the box with brakelights... is that good?

Cheers for your help guys (and gals)... all comments appreciated.....

Stu.

Givi top box

I think you're going along the best route with O.E. panniers and a Givi top box but you may have trouble with the brake light on the 12s weird wiring.

I agree, from what I've heard, wiring an extra brake light to the GS can cause expensive problems for the ABS - nothing to do specifically with the 1200, more to do with the fact that the brake light is controlled by the ABS controller which expects to see a very specific load on the circuit. I'd be reluctant to try this.

The givi boxes are good for holding helmets, better than the BMW ones, but my personal opinion is that they are not as strong - then again if you have side boxes on, the top box is unlikely to hit the ground in a spill.

I note your concerns about the wiring, i didn't realise it had impact on the ABS... guess i'll be using the reflective bit only, and not wiring the brake lights in then !!

Anyone know of best places to buy Givi?

You can buy the boxes without brake lights, which will be cheaper.

When my girlfriend bought one she just went to the local bike shop, I'm pretty sure it was cheaper than 170 quid, but it was a few years ago so I'm not really sure, sorry!

I bought a givi E52 (without brake light kit) from Hein Gerick for about £150 just before xmas.

Givi are v. good and I've not heard of any top boxes falling off (unlike the BMW ones). The E52 is , in my opinion, too big for a top box, I use an E42 and I can just squeeze two full face helmets in it. I wouldn't bother with the extra brake light as they are a bit of a pain when you take the case off. Your price doesn't sound too bad, depends on colour or if plain black.

This issue has been solved and shouldn't be a problem.
See the thread entitled "Givi Top Box stop lights" at http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=35398
Someone has also managed to get them working without the relay simply by using the jumper connection directly into the stop lights. This is worth a try before hooking up a relay.

See my previous post on how to wire the lights.
Here are pictures of the connector between the Givi box and the circuit.
On the Givi rack, there is a two pin connector which makes contact with the connector on the bottom of the Givi box. Givi provide a pastic cap for the connector for when you don't have the box fitted, or you can just cover it with tape.
I know that some riders consider this box too large, but I have been using a Maxia (or equivalent) for many years on my K1200RS, R1150GS, and now the R1200GS without problems.
I have ridden in all weathers including strong cross winds. Trying out the R1200GS top speed, it indicated 225 kph with BMW panniers and the Givi top box and I didn't have any handling problems.

Thanks Vampire... i like the idea of the lights working, so if they're not too difficult to wire in... me thinks i'll be having a go :)

cheers for pics.... paints a thousand words etc...

I use a V46 in standard black/silver. Great capacity, goes well with the look of the bike and BM panniers (IMHO). Can't comment on brake light except to say maybe a replacement LED unit for the standard light might do a similar job.
