Givi pannier width??? ......

Hi All,
I am new to the whole forum thing so please be nice to start with ;) and just got a new (to me) 1200 GS 2008 which I love!
I have got a few jobs done on it already, sat nav fitted, rear rack swapped for Givi rack etc and this is where I need a bit of help as I keep coming up against brick walls. I have a Givi topbox (already fitted) and some Givi E360 panniers which I would like to fit instead of the vario panniers that are already on as I need more space. The E360 boxes are 40 litres each and the varios are 30 litres at best expanded.
I understand the Givi pannier racks sit out wider as obviously the exhaust is in the way on the left side but I can't find anywhere that gives the dimensions of the gap between the pannier rails when fitted to the bike. Even Givi can't tell me (read as .... Can't be bothered to find out) ;) so I was wondering if anyone has the Givi PL684 pannier racks fitted (pic attached somewhere) and if so, would you be kind enough to measure the width of the rails so I can work out how much wider my Givi boxes will be than the varios when they are fitted as I don't want to struggle filtering. I apologise for the long-winded waffle, and promise it won't happen again.... Till next time! :)

I'm pretty sure the PL684 rack is offset, ie. it sticks further out on the exhaust side, and would usually be used with asymmetrical width boxes, e. Trekker Outback 37L & 48L. If you fit the E360 both sides it's going to be wider to the left, also probably wider on the left side than you'd want.

Box widths are:
E360 - 280mm
37L Outback - 246mm
48L Outback - 306mm

Well measured mine although mines an adventure which is the givi pl685 and I can't see any difference but from centre of tyre to outside of tube on exhaust side is 290 mm and 255 mm again from centre of tyre hope that helps

Cheers Bobbin-Man. I understand what u mean about the boxes, I just need the measurements between the givi pannier mounting rails so I can compare them against the BMW boxes so I know how much more room I need to filter. Don't want to be queueing!!

Not sure if they are exactly the same as the PL 684 but they cant be much different. Cheers matey! :)

By the way Hexme, are the boxes symmetrical or does the left side stick out further cos of the exhaust? Its hard to tell by the pics. And is yours the Gs as opposed to the Adventure?

The exhaust side sticks out 35 mm more I use mine with e45 boxes and they are a few inches wider than the bars incidently the frames on mine measure 10 mm narrower than hexme s looking at his picture with the tape , either way there a good set up and I've had no problems

Thanks The bigun.
Going on Hexme's 21.5" between frames, it is only 3" wider than my Bandit and on what u are saying about the offset, I guess it will be 1.5" further out on the left and maybe 1.5" on the right. Just need to keep to slightly right of centre in the traffic gaps! Haha.

550mm (rack) + 280mm + 280mm = 1110mm ... pretty sure my Adventure panniers and racks total around 1000mm, that's 11cm less. Not sure I'd want to gain another 4" over my setup, already a little wider than I'm comfy with when filtering!
 
Hi Steve, my pannier rail are fitted to my GSA, and the left side sticks out a little to get past the exhaust.
 
Just looked on the Givi site, mine is PL685 but the measurements shouldn't be that different.
 
The RHS frame looks like it could be closer to the bike but the final drive case needs space to move on full bump so 110mm from the tyre to inside of frame is about as close as it can get. The LHS could be the same as the right but you would need a narrower exhaust silencer can and a custom link pipe to allow the can to sit parallel to the wheel. They usually angle outwards taking up more space than necessary.

TBH none of that is complicated so I don't know why Givi etc don't offer a full package for people.

Yes I appreciate that but its only 2" per side and still only 3" wider in total than they were on my Bandit but will have a play with the tape measure at the weekend seeing as my week seems to be full already! Haha.

Thanks for all ur help Hexme.
I will have a proper measure up at the weekend but I would really like to get my Givi stuff on so I might just bite the bullet and put up with whatever size it is. It is still gonna be thinner than a lot of touring bikes :)
