Hi There,

I am thinking of putting a GIVi topbox with the brake light attachment on to my new 1200ADV but the BMW dealer says it might muck up the electrical system.

Has anyone fitted the above to their GS?

Regards,

David.

Hi Dave, the dealer is talking bo**ocks. Just fit and splice into the brake light wiring. My bike has more led`s than you can shake a stick at fitted at the back. 48 extra in high level brake lamp, 24 as extra running light on bottom of number plate. Also the led`s in the lamp unit I replaced. As the led`s hardly ever blow, (never had one go yet), there is no worry on my part at the rear so to say. Ditch the bulb in the tail light as well to make it safer.
No problems in 6 months use with the can bus system. Just one insignificant word of caution, the can bus detects a no current flow i.e. when the filament of the bulb blows when the circuit is operated, and shows a warning symbol on the display. As there are no filaments to go this will only show a fault if the wiring is broken. I tested the system after fitting it by disconnecting the units wiring and it showed a fault on the display. But if you have one led go theres lots more left operating. This would only apply to your brake light circuit which if the bulb filament went would not show a fault as you would still have current draw on the led`s

I believe the can bus controller actually detects the amount of current draw. So adding leds will probably not affect the electronics due to the extra current drawn being very little. However if the Givi lights are bulbs and not leds then the can bus controller may detect this as "overcurrent" and shut the system down.

I have the Givi Maxxia top-box with incandescent brake lights.... R1200GS....
I just connected the power wire to the spare tab sticking up from the brake light connector...

BMW power controller hasn't complained once...
