Givi Topbox bolts sheared

I read about it happening to someone too. (not sure if it was here or ADVRider)... I include a shake of them in my pre-ride check now...

Al...

Twas here on UKGSer .. posted 30th March by me..

Titled "WARNING - GIVI RACK MOUNT"

I ended up re-threading the frame ends and using larger diameter bolts.. as well as re-drilling plates / re-milling spacers etc.. to get a better (less stressed) fit..

The "pattern bike" - i guess - was diferrent to mine.. the mount is a poor fit... because.. when looking at the frame ends... they are differing lengths from the welds.. making one of the GIVI arms a really poor fit... and generally screwing it all up!?!?

Sooo... IMO.. its the rather large tolerances on the frame end.. rather than a poor rack pattern.. I believe Dutch has had similar issues when using a single bike as a "pattern" for the Hugger/brake hose...

Fogot to say in my last post, I've changed the bolts for better quality but not gone stainless as they have a lower tensile strength than bright steel. I'm now considering drilling and tapping bigger holes to take larger diameter bolts but not sure how to get them through the rack without weakening it.

What did you drill them out to, diameter I mean? and has it been OK since.

Only did it last weekend.. and haven't used it in "anger" yet!?!

I'll take a pic or two.. Can't remember the diameter - off hand... but drilled the rack holes and the "neck of the new bolts "sit outside" the collar now..

Bro is an metal "engineer".. and he was "appy" bout it!?! Sooo.. I reckon it'll be ok ;)

Thanks, I've just put some nice new shiny bolts in but if it happens again I'll copy your idea.
I had to put a slight bit of extra bend in the support arms (big vice needed for this) to get it to align properly so maybe it will be OK now.

I've just checked mine.

And one of my bolts has sheared off!!!! :(

Looks like we have a design fault here.

Is anyone talking to Givi about this?
