I'm picking up a new (to me) R1250GSA - I've got rid of the XR.

Now, I don't want the aluminium BMW top box as it looks a little small so I was looking at the Givi Trekker Outback.

Without seeing them in real life it's hard to visual how big it would look on the bike.

So, which size would most people go for? I guess the biggest size I need is for a 17" laptop.

42L
46L
58L (is this just ridiculously sized?)

Thanks

I had a Triumph Explorer 1200 with the Triumph 42L top case which is basically a rebranded Givi Outback Trekker. I was able to fit a full face helmet into it with ease and also just about get a 17inch MacBook Pro diagonally inside it if that helps. As for what it looked like on the bike here is a pic but obviously it's not the right bike but I too didn't like how tiny the BMW top box was but I opted for the SW Motech system.

I have the 58l. Comfortably takes 2 helmets. Restricts the hinging up of the side case lids a bit when on but doesnt stop you undoing both clasps and taking lid off. Wouldn't have anything smaller personally. Sorry can't post a pic.

I have the 58L. Doesn't look out of place with the ally panniers. In my opinion of course.

Seem to remember the big one is known for causing a bit of instability and weaving at 80+ mph.
I had one on my 1200gslc and experienced a gentle wandering at speed.
I assume this is why BMW don't offer a big topbox themselves.

58 litre givi topbox

Pic of it on the bike with Holan panniers.

I have both the Givi Trekker Outback 42l and the 58l which I mix and match between the bikes, 58 litre is mainly for two up touring, looks fine when the panniers are on but absolutely huuuge without them.
For everyday use the 42l easily takes a ful face lid and u lock and loads of other crap. A much more useful size than BMW's top own box

I've got the Dolomiti versions in a 30L and a 46L.

The 30 is plenty for day to day (and very unobtrusive) - big enough for a laptop in a rucksack.

The 46 is pretty big (enough for a week away if carefully packed) and doesn't affect stability.

Can post some pictures later if it would help, but if you look on Givi's site they have the measurements against diagrams so you can check if they're OK for you...

Been fine on mine up to 160 kmph, two up with bmw panniers

bmw do indeed list a large 2 helmet top box for the gs not gsa its the same as the rt one but fits on the gs vario mount mind you its 800 quid or thereabouts

I had the 58lt and it was way to big, used to bounce about if overfilled, I went for a kappa 48lt fits on a givi plate and much better imho

Was fine on mine too - never experienced weaving of any sort, fully laden or otherwise - either one or two up, made no difference.

Never experienced that - either the mount or box comes with two sets of damping rubbers. You sure the correct ones were used?

Mine to. Like I said only issue is slightly restricted access to side cases but nothing major. Do agree with the comment that it looks huge with no side cases, but looks fine with them on. With that box and side cases, me and the mrs can go out , get changed and store 2 helmets, 2 pairs of boots, 2 pairs of gloves, 2 jackets, 2 pairs of leather trousers and a back protector locked in the cases.

you have the kappa 48l too that is made by givi I suppose

46l Dolomiti was my choice - but I sold the GSA so it’s on the for sale board at a bargain price!
