When I was away in Belgium, my Vodafone account for some bizarre reason lost all its data services *. This, coupled to a flakey WiFi service on an otherwise excellent ‘holiday site’ left me all but blind.

Fellow UKGSer subscriber, Andy J, recommended a GlocalMe portable Wi-Fi hotspot dongle thing (I have no idea what they are properly called) which he has used with complete success. I bought one.

Even I, who wouldn’t know one end of a SIM card from another, found it easy to set-up, using the YouTube ‘Here is how to do it’ video. It seems to work well, booming in 5G and shareable by up to 16 devices, apparently.

It is neatly sized, weighs next to nothing and is nicely made. It has an in-house Cloud SIM (I thinks its called) but can take a third party SIM if you’d like it to. It is battery powered, the battery life being reported to be very good. It can also act as a power brick, to charge a phone.

* Vodafone have now mended this.

One tip / warning.

Whist the excellent device needs a prolonged push off the ‘on button’ to start it up, I found a possible problem.

I keep all my electrical kit in a bag. I put the bag into another overnight bag, where something pressed on the ‘on button’, turning the device on. I only noticed when I turned my phone on and wondered why it was connecting, not to my mother’s very fast WiFi, but to the Numen Air, which I’d been careful to turn off.

Take a little care when packing away!

Just asking as sister has bought Motorhome . What would be good dongle thingy . To use in UK . All say big things but never works . Also thinking of working out of van with portable WiFi. Any thoughts or suggestions on what might work best for her . Home WiFi has been cut off . So what are the Hive Mind thinking.

Have a look for MiFi units with a Smarty SIM card
The beauty of Smarty is that you can turn down the monthly rate to next to nothing, while the MH is not being used, and just turn it up when away. I use the Smarty SIM in my setup and when not in use it's about £4 a month and when in use I go for unlimited data for £20.

Point her in the direction of the Motorhome Fun forum.

Tons of advice, especially about mifi etc in motorhomes.

They don’t quite have the same sense of humour there as on here, but I don’t know anywhere else that does 🤪

So out of the box, with the eSIM, it works in all those other countries but not Britain? Sounds about right!

I didn't say that

they offer different packages so you need to buy the one that suits your needs as part of the initial package, e.g. Euro zone 1, Asia, global etc. The included eSIM seems to have 15GB of data included then you have to buy a plan once it is used. At that point it might be more cost effective to get a physical SIM only deal from Lebara, again, depending on what coverage you require.
