Glossary of BM ownership terms, please.

Reliving bike trips whilst sat at my desk....
I often check out the technical section to get an idea of what might go amiss on a BM, so that it won't catch me by surprise if it happens.

So can anyone explain some of the parts I keep hearing about, what they do and where they are found?

Eg,
Lambda probes :confused:
Hall sensors :eek
Code plugs (or summut like that) :o

Any others you can think of, I'm all eyes.

Oh, and yes, I have looked in the manual and I have not found them, nor do I know where to look.

Good post, I'd like to know the answers to these too.

OK, maybe time for a sensible answer?

A lambda sensor (or probe) sits somewhere in the exhaust (in the case of the 1150 GS this is on the front of the catalytic convertor or in the fork of the Y-piece) and monitors the exhaust in order to allow the ECU to determine the correct mixuture. All bikes (and cars) with catalytic convertors have a lambda sensor to prevent the mixture becoming too rich which would damage the cat.

Hall Sensor? Never heard of one referred to in relation to a GS but "the function of a Hall sensor is based on the physical principle of the Hall effect named after its discoverer E. H. Hall: It means that a voltage is generated transversely to the current flow direction in an electric conductor (the Hall voltage), if a magnetic field is applied perpendicularly to the conductor". Go figure....

A code plug (you probably mean Cat Code Plug) is used to access a different ignition/injection map on the chip in the ECU. It looks like a relay and sits with the relays in the fuse box under the seat - all it does is connect two connectors together. It's generally used if the standard/default map is not considered to be appropriate but no-one's ever managed to figure out exactly which cat code plugs do what. Steptoe has some theories, though.

That's the unique type of plug/socket arrangement that BMW decided to use for their accessories. Unique as in no one else uses them and you need a Harvey Hubbell Midget Twist-Lock to Cigarette Lighter Plug Connector Adapter in order to power anything off a BMW accessory socket.

Is that flanged sir?

The sad thing is that I have actually used them so I know exactly what they are!

Lambda probes - do go wrong, but won't stop you getting home .

Hall sensors - do go wrong, and will stop you getting home .

Code plugs - some bikes don't even have one fitted, but some people get in a state over them, and leave home .

Rear bevel bearing - will go pearshaped, you may get home, depends how near to home you are when it decides to play silly buggers . .

Yep - the other thing you would like to know is how much it will cost :eek:


The hall sensors - well in very simplistic terms - they are like the old points - they tell the EFI when to fire the spark plugs and inject fuel... sorta. :beer:
 
With regard to the cat code plug........i recently fitted a remus and y piece can someone tell me.......? no i am kidding really (the leaving home thing made me laugh....you should have your own show neil.....)...... :D
