I am curious to actually how many of you manage to go off-road. What I mean is some light country trails etc not the deep mudplugging for which a proper motocrosser will suit.

The reason I ask is because I am not sure whether I would use the GS off road if I got one. (Although in my mind I think I would) What concerns me is the road bais of the 1200 and the weight

Cheers

Sam

Yeah I know what you mean - the 1200 is a bit light weight for off roading isn't it. Get yerself a good solid 1100 and delight in how it flies over ruts , splashes through rivers , skips accross the sand and skims through the mud :D

Ridden my 1200 on the Ridgeway in the UK and along farm tracks and across fields in Eire. It's great fun off-road but, it's no Enduro bike it's too heavy. Having said that it's better than my old R100GS.

Expect a few scratches when you take your GS off road.

The bike might get scratched also.;)

The front wheel doesn't like mud much (perhaps a 21" would be better for the oilheads) but their weight isn't really felt until it's time to pick 'em up.
All the GSs are perfectly capable to ride 95% of trails (although don't expect it to be an easy ride!). I've been riding mine on the trails of the Peak District since my first one - always fun and always a bit of a challenge. You'll enjoy it.

Going off road

These ruts are a foot deep once your in them thats it,
it's not a good idea to go green laning alone

yup. It's a long walk back to the road in order to get some help getting out.:P I take mine off-road where ATV's and jeeps go and have no issues with it. Sure it's heavier but I find just keeping the momentum going with a clear line of sight is the key. Know your terrain. Contrary to popular belief the 12GS isn't less off-road worthy than other Gses I've ridden with. They get stuck where I get stuck and they get out where I get out. Off road I think the differences, excluding the first gear of the Adv, is negligible.
