HI Chaps, were off to sweden in 2009 around Mid to early july.
can you offer some decent biking roads, and nice things to see and do?
I have a garmin 2610, so if you have any routes or poi,s that would be great, no gravel roads please, all tarmac.
No camping but good hotels,we are getting old you see.
Thanks very much , All the best, Kent.

These people are very friendly (better pictures on the swedish language pages)

Mora bike club

I like Abisco right at the top, chair lift to mountain top cafe and lovely walks also handy for nipping over to Narvik/Tromso on Norway coast.

Can you narrow it down a bit?

Sweden is a big country. If you leave Malmo (bottom south) in place then flip the country over, the top will end up in Rome.

There is an excellent tourist system, contact them for ideas on hotels.

Probably the best are the tourist hotels or 'vandrarhem'. These are a sort of 'youth hostels' crossed with holiday camps. We do not have anything similar in the UK, so it is difficult to create a picture. They are very good and much cheaper than regular hotels. The locals use them, more than international 'tourists'.

There is a dedicated Swedish motorcycle tourist map. I have one.

You could order one no doubt via a good map shop here in the UK. Or you could call Stockholms MC Varuhus (a large dealer in Stockholm) who will no do doubt send you one. They speak excellent English. +46 8 50620500.http://www.mcvaruhuset.se/

Generally speaking, head North where the scenery improves.

The big bridge is awesome, and there are lots of forrests and lakes as expected. trouble with the South is that it is quite flat - so you don't get to see the vista unfold before you. IYSWIM

Lake Vattern was great - Vadstena hotel a good find.

Have a look at http://www.caerwigau.co.uk/Sweden_2006.html for some piccies.

I can get to Garmin routes tonight if you want - basically 2 days Eskbjerg (?sp) Denmark to Stockholm and 2 days back (after late start Stockholm). But I wish I could have ridden further and further North/East.

Take care with speeds - 129kph on an empty motorway cost me around £130

The roads are good, the peeps VERY friendly and they speak excellent English

Swden.........

I grew up in Sweden,
It is generally beautiful, off the beaten track is best. I also agree that the further north you go the finer it gets. That does NOT mean you need to ne north of Gavle to see good stuff.
The weather should be great at that time of year. Check out the 'everymans right' which allows you to camp anywhere pretty much.
Any further help advice etc let me know. Most of all ENJOY!
Regards
Chod

:rob Out of curiosity; why do you want to go to Sweden on a bike trip? The riding there is mostly very boring?

other people say its very good.
other people say the stelvio pass in italy is the best biking road in europe, its not, there are better.been there done that.
who do you believe, just try it for yourself...and form your own opinions..
all the best PAul.

Went a few years back and found the roads to be a bit bad (not horrendous, just a bit nasty in places). They seem to have a problem with extreme cold during winter and extremely hot during summer causing buckles in the road.
Also if they're replacing the road surface up north they seem to just leave several kilometers of deep gravel while they wait for the tarmac to appear. A real shock when you come round a corner at speed and run straight into it!

Mind you, we were trying to get from the north (entered from Bodo region in Norway) to Stockholm as quickly as possible, so we only really saw the major east coast road. and a few coast roads. The further south we got the better the roads got.

One thing I really liked (other than Stockholm which is one of my favourite all time cities) was the beaches. It's as though someone decided to stick a load of med beaches on the Swedish coast! Great for swimming and relaxing after a long days ride.

The people are really, really friendly, and night life was great!

One last thing........... BEWARE THE MOOSE! Big buggers!

they were resurfacing the main roads last summer as i found out. Mind u 40km of gravel was ok on the big KTM Adventure but would have hated to have been on a sports bike or similar.

I mostly travelled the back gravel roads and offroad sections through Sweden back over into Norway.

ANywhere around the borders between the two are fantastic and the roads get better the closer to the border you get.

If you take your 2610 beware of the card in the back vibrating out on the gravel roads and causing your sat nav to pack in, Mine did frequently.

Swedish roads are boring in comparison to Norways BUT they are empty apart from the odd mad ELK and you can travel easier and quicker than in Norway.

I di both Norway and Sweden last year and loved them both for different reasons.

Hi
I live in the middle of Sweden in a district called dalarna, I would recomend a visit to this area if you are in Sweden, there are great bike roads, and no it isn´t flat. Lots of great lakes and good views.
Here is a link to a nice area around a lake called Siljan with lots of cozy small villages scattered around.
The link you got at the start of the thread "More bike club" is from this area.

http://www.siljan.se/2008/eng/index.htm

and a site with information for the whole district.

and my town

Give us a shout if you are in the area,
Phil

What BigblackGS says is right.

The area is attractive, for sure.

I have been to Falun several times, doing insurance work for Stora Enso, the giant pulp and paper group.

If you go to Falun it's definitely worth taking a look at Stora's museum and the old copper mine. The trips down the mine are very well arranged.

In Norway the scenery that we rode through in the day was far better than Sweden.

In Sweden the scenery that you wanted to ride at night was far better than Norway.............IYKWIM ;)

as an ex-pat living over here, here`s my two cents: generally people over here v. friendly nearly everyone speaks good english, avoid E- roads (motorways) if you can, as anywhere wiggly lines on the map = most fun, talking on the phone whilst driving- ok, 10km over speed limit-heinous, go figure! take care. july known as the rainy month but probably no worse than uk. camping places cheap and plentiful, hotels and food expensive, vandrahems good option. further north you go the more important mosquito repellant will be. come and enjoy!

Sweden? Why? Okidoki, you want Sweden, then I give you Sweden...

:P

...not my cup of tea, but it is your holiday, so:

If you like old trains:

Tuut-tuuut! :thumb2
This is in Grengesberg.

But there are more old trains, and trains used in the old mines, in this area.

Surf and see if you find a museum on your route! :)

If you like old motorbikes:
http://home.swipnet.se/mc-dalsland/index.htm
= Ed's MC-& Motormuseum, in the south, not far from Norway.:)

Visit this museum at Motala:
http://www.motormuseum.se/default.asp?sida They have a Megola! :thumb2:thumb2

The museum at Motala are next to the channel Gota Kanal:
http://www.gotakanal.se/templates/default____5206.aspx
Nice! :)
http://www.gotakanal.se/templates/product____5094.aspx?prodId=51375 And if you are just passing Borensberg, you must stop there for a while! :thumb2

Linkoping have Sviestad race track, and a museum for planes (SAAB made aeroplanes before!)

:)
BMW mc in Sweden!

Not in English, but if you klick a district you get the name for a person, and then you can try to ask the ''ambassadeur'' for more help.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Museums_in_Sweden = more museums for you. :)

...and when you get tired of the flat and nice Sweden, go to the land of hairpins and fjords - you know what I have in my mind... ;)

Sweden = nice.
Norway = sometimes nice, sometimes not boring nice... :thumb

Have fun - that is important! :thumb2:pullface:clap:blagblah:roll:eek::D:bounce1

:bounce1 Liv.
