I need to upgrade my laptop anyway so have opted for the big change to Mac. I have always used a PC and have heard all the arguements for and against PC v Mac. I will be honest and say one of the reasons I'm changing is because the G4 laptops are gorgeous!
I was wondering if anyone else has made the move recently and if they have had any problems. One of my drawing packages (wsi-wyg) is PC only but I am planning to get virtual PC 6.1 xp professional to help me over the change but any advice on the subject would be greatly appreciated.
thanks
Darryl

Well done on choosing a proper computer.

Virtual PC is only OK at running windoze apps .. and rubbish at running anything graphics intensive.

Vectorworks is a fantastic Mac CAD application and can import / export DWG/DXF files with no problem.

If you are running Cast Lighting's WSYSYG for 3D or visualisation then you have no chance in Virtual PC and may have to stay on the dark side.

I use the wysiwyg to draw up lighting plans but never have time to do all the rendering so it maybe ok on virtual pc, what i may do though is dump everything else off the pc onto the mac and use the pc just for wysi wyg, one day I may find the time to learn cad properly and move onto another drawing package.
thanks

And to think I thought I was the only LD with a GS .. what sort of stuff do you do?

I'd be interested to hear of you can get the 2d and reporting side of WYSIWYG working on VPC - I've tried the demo version and found that it fell over but then I was probably trying to play with bells + whistles 3d stuff.

I can let you have all my vectorworks symbols (and maybe an evaluation version of the software) if you want to try it out ..

I am a freelance TV LD, I try and stick to music shows but as always you have to take whats available and end up doing all kinds of shite, currently working on a new saturday night show with johnny & denise.
I'm running the new all singing & dancing wysi-wyg 7 (I think) its very clever but my main likes for it is being able to export .dwg as everyone seems to be able to read them and it keeps the layers as drawn.
What kind of stuff do you do heston?

(and you pete A with your old fashioned stencil thing) :D

What I have to contend with is multiple LD's providing different format Lighting Plans that have to be compled into one composite rig plan some come as DWG's, some on tracing paper, some just a set of notes.

And dont get me started on AutoCAD as a design tool for set design.

Im not an LD im the Technical Manager for Pitlochry Festival Theatre.

I'm also freelance and I'll work for anyone who'll have me. This means that I end up mainly working for bands but also doing a bit of corporate when I can bear it. I started off as a vari-lite operator and still occasionally program and operate other people's shows.

I'm currently 'resting' as I have my arm in plaster after being knocked off my bike but I'll be back in action before the end of the summer.

Going to Mac

Well Done Daryll,
I have used Macs for years, I learned on a PC then did a course on Photoshop on a Mac , I was converted. you will enjoy the Mac.
Once you have one you will grow to like it. The only down side is the price.
reagrds
Barrie.
