um, nope...

yam bike insurance is 395 fully comp for a daily commute (300 excess). lancaster insurance was 435 (500 excess). altho i am a year older now so maybe that was the reason for the reduction?

Funny how Bennetts quoted me £584 to insure a Fazer and £345 to insure a GS then. Both quotes were through Norwich Union.

Bob

well the the gs policy ran aug to aug; i redeemed it in march and expecting 5/12's of insurance back was rather optimistic......instead, got a cheque for £24.12 back in the post today. nice.

also, the yam insurance will cover me for any bike up to and including the likes of an r1, blade etc....didnt need it but for the sake of an extra £25 it seemed worth having for those possible impulsive summer purchases. also, yamaha are more than likely subbing any business done through their insurance line as a way of guaranteeing bike sales to their younger punters.

So straight away, by cancelling the GS insurance policy, you have lost £157. Wouldn't it have been feasible to change bikes on the policy?

And you are probably correct about Yamaha subsidising the insurance in an effort to make some sales. Trouble is, these schemes are always short term.

Bob

yep 157 chancers southbound.

but lancaster quoted me 800 for the fazer adding after the quote that this would probably halve next year as i would have been on the bike for one year...... no, really?????

as for the policy being short term, im not too bothered by that either as the problems in the insurance mkt are cyclical and the general situation for them is now improving allowing them to be more competitive.

also, i dont see yam, honda or kawasaki bailing out of insurance quotes for the next 3 years on the basis they have just released a rather nutty bunch of bikes they have to sell in volume to claw back the r+d and make a profit.

anyway 157 quid? thatll be 2.5 hrs at a local friendly stealer.....now that i would resent, definately!!

The insurance market does fluctuate, but one thing that doesn't change is the groupings for each bike. The GS 11** has been a group 13 since it came on to the market. The Fazer was rated a group 15. For me, that means a difference per year of £250. I don't see the differential being any less for someone under 40.

The manufacturers are not insurers, and I doubt they have the funding to keep on subsidising the policies for the bikes rated group 15 and above long term. Its commonplace for them to attract buyers with a great premium in the first year, and then charge you a more realistic market rate the following year. If Yamaha are insuring you for less than the cost of a GS, they are swallowing at least £250 of their profit on the bike to subsidise the insurance deal.

Throw in the cost differential of £50 for a set of tyres for a GS and the Fazer (not to mention the increased frequency they will need to be changed on the Fazer) and the "cheaper" option starts to look more costly.

Bob

I saw a 1994 1100GS yesterday with 100000 miles on the clock and when I asked the owner what difficulties he had with the bike since new his answer was. NONE. I was just about to start a race so I could not press him on it but sounds good to me. Mine has 45000miles so I have a long way to go. I wonder how many Fazers willmake it that far....

Im a died in the wool BMer, especially a GSer. But I could easily imagine changing to something else. To be honest I have always liked the look of the fazer (not the new one). Tried one about six months ago and I thought it was really good. The fastenings on my (5 month old 7500km) adv are in about the same condition as my ex 14 year old 70000km R100GS or even on bikes I had that were much older.

still I think the bike is really good, and I am not going to change it because the bolts are made out of pure crap. Having said that I think my next bike will either be a something other than a bm or another airhead.

seeing as I am planning to do at least 100k miles on this one, the other manufactures have plenty fo time to prep something special just for me!!

bob. do you shadow me on every financial descision i make?im thinking of changing my mortgage can you help there too????!!!

whats this about tyre change frequency and price???again any bike hammered will need tyre changes more regularly. sadly m11, a406 and route to central london doesnt allow for speedy gonzales at rush hour. fazer owners get bt 6-10k on their tyres. sure you can get a lot less but thats also true for the gs.

as for price diff, no where near 50 quid im afraid. a lot lot less, infact about 20 quid. anyway, even costing more cash is fine because its great to have road biased rubber. makes handling in the wet FAR better and ultimately safer. the gs always felt vague in the wet regardless what it was wearing and at least now i can feel whats going on especially at the front end. where i have to watch more keenly than before is drain hole covers and accelerating at that precise point. thats interesting for sure

as for the insurance. i can only say what im paying. also the price diff bt a normal bike and the new uber machine is so great , even 200 quid extra a yr to a rider in london is still worth doing.anyway sure if i moved back to london and its crime my insurance wud go back up but thats why i dont any longer.

I just bought a new front tyre for my GS. Cost was £69 fitting to a loose rim, including new valve and balance. 6 months ago, a new front tyre for my Triumph (120/70ZR17, same size as the Fazer) was £91 fitted to a loose rim and balanced, valve not changed. A front tyre on the GS lasts me 14000 miles. That works out at just under half a pence per mile. Spread over 10000 miles, front tyre costs are £49.30. The front tyre on the Triumph lasts me 10000 miles, which means £91 per 10000 miles.

A rear tyre for the GS lasts me 11000 miles, and the last one cost me £95 fitted to a loose wheel, balanced and new valve. Cost per 10000 miles = £86.36. The last rear tyre for the Triumph (180/55ZR17, same size as the Fazer) cost me £115. They last me 7500. Cost per 10000 miles = £153.

So, tyre cost for the BMW over 10000 miles = £135.66
The Triumph comes in at £244 over 10000 miles. An annual difference of almost £110 just on the tyres alone.

The Sprint ST weighs about the same as a Fazer and is less powerful, so its reasonable to assume the tyre life on the Fazer will be less than the Triumph in my hands.

As for the financial aspect of bike ownership, you were the one who first commented on it when you brought up servicing costs at main BMW dealers. You claimed that a Yamaha would be half as expensive to service than a BMW, but then made a ludicrous cost comparison between a BMW dealer and a backstreet ex racer who you have found to service your Fazer. Hardly a vlaid comparison. Fact is, you can find BMW servicing for a lot cheaper than the main dealers. Steptoe charges in the region of £160 for a 12000 service on the GS, which is half the rate of some of the BMW dealers out there. You can save even more by doing it yourself, which is what I do. Its a simple 1910 design after all.

You must have met that bloke in the pub with an opinion on everything.

“Oh yeah I had one of those. Sh*t compared with my new one”

He could be talking about anything from his car to the new toaster he just bought. After a few nights of hearing this you wise up.

What do you do in the pub? You nod and agree then wander off to talk to someone else.

This is how some people are. We all learn in the end.
