going to see (for second time) a 2002 1150RT tomorrow -
14,000 miles f.s.h., electric screen, heated grips, full luggage, A.B.S. looks immaculate - hardly a mark on it - i think i'm gona buy it -

it's from a dealer so not cheap - they want £6,999 with a years BMW factory warranty, tax and new M.O.T. - they will also give it a full service.

anybody got any tips on what exactly to look out for.....? like i said it looks in perfect condition but i've never had an "RT" before - compared to the other ones the dealer has it is in good nick - the others all have pitted fork legs (similar mileage and age) this one really does look good....

any tips / thoughts most welcome. thanks.

RT

Bloody good bike if that is what you like, but make sure you can touch the ground easily because its bloody heavy, and the footbrake will have you over the bars if your not prepared. Nearly got one myself ,but went for 1150GS and have not looked back. It does everything an RT will do and more besides.

who are you calling short??? i'm average height ok!!!! :)

i have an '05 1200GS but have covered 18,000miles in 6 months from new......i do a fair few motorway miles and reckon an RT would be better for comfort - i intend to use the RT for as a workhorse and keep the GS as a toy......

it's a "kid A bear" as used by popular (but not round this forum) beat combo Radiohead.

animated .gif nicked off one of their fansites & lightly modded in Adobe Imageready.

Crackin bike............but have a good look at ebay.....There are RT1150 bikes there which are cheaper and younger. Dealers are really being greedy with the second hand prices of RT 1150s

Also have a look at the bike trader.

Regards

My dad has one and is very chuffed but, as pointed out above, it is heavy. His is a 02 also, and was recalled last week for a safety check. Something to do with a possible fuel leak from the carb feed pipe. Rare and unlikely to be a hazard according to the dealer, but still worth checking its been done, I guess.

He does say that its comfy and having been given a lift on it I have to say the pillion perch is more of an armchair and very comfy too.

Enjoy, and good bargaining!

rt

dull! dull! dull! once you finnish playing with the electric screen and nearly fall off due to both front and back brake coming on with the servo on the rear brake lever...hundreds out there second hand, most dealers stuffed with em.
Phone one up and see how much they will give YOU for one. Well you did ask. nick

Generally an eye-opener. If they offer you shit, then there's your bargaining tool, but don't forget they have to make a few Sheckels aswell....Good luck

My friend bought one last year - 2001 model with 23K - paid £3800 privately. The fork legs were pitted though, as were most of the fasteners but with a bit of Hammerite here and there, new stainless fasteners and a good clean and polish it is now virtually mint! Additional expense - less than £50!!!

I'd save myself £3000 if I were you but, then again, we're all different.

Cracking bike though!

Andy

Cookie- your logo is actually copyright of "W.A.S.T.E" not radiohead....(Radioheads merchandise company) - see my earlier comment. :)

well - bought a 53 twin spark 1150 RT fully loaded (it actually has a "car" sized stereo buried in the near side fairing - don't worry - thats gone already!!) 5,800miles so little enough miles for me to run it in a little myself -

i rode quite a few and the difference in performance was dramatic (on same bikes - 15,000 - 30,000 miles) i figured it's all down to how someone has run it in - so i went for the low mileage one...can ride it a little harder and get some decent performance out of it....

as for the saga jokes - well - the RT is "sensible" and "practical" - but i'm keeping the GS - and for the longer motorway trips the RT is def. a better bike.....better economy, better range, better comfort, better weather protection - i'm only buying it as a work horse - my GS looks a little tired after all the work miles :)

When I first got my GS I wasn't sure that I'd made the right choice so test rode 4 different RT's, an 1100 and one low mileage (sub 10k) single spark 1150, one higher mileage (38k & a hard life) single spark 1150 & a twin spark 1150.

They were all very different with one being very slow to get a move on and another being very revvy. In order of preference I ranked them as :

1st - Twin Spark 1150
2nd - Single spark 1150 (38k)
3rd - 1100
4th - Single spark 1150 (sub 10k)

The Twin Spark went very well, handled well for the size but was too expensive for me and the dealer sold it to the bloke who test rode it after me.

The 38k 1150 was a good price but had spent it's life by the sea and had a lot of corrosion on the engine & fasteners.

The 1100 was good, was very revvy but I do prefer a 6 speed gearbox.

The other single spark 1150 felt very tight and felt very slow compared to the others.

In the end I kept the GS and have been happily 'tourateching etc...' ever since :)

I have had 3. All very good bikes. Did not like the linked brake system on the last edition. Just that I prefer the unlinked version.
I found that continental touring in summer with the full fairing very warm.
