Good will v Recall

Have BMW scored a marketing victory with the "good will" style extended warranty for known faults?.
We all feel like we have been treated as special when we receive it.
It seems to me that BMW have avoided recall on the "big 3" (engine-gearbox oil leak, final drive problem & battery) ,with a thing called "good will". I wonder how long the "good will" will last after the warranty has expired. A recall would have resolved these problems for all of us, but would have been a publicity and cost nightmare for BMW.
On balance I wonder if they have actually made the right financial choice.
