Took a birl through the borders today. Through the Moorfoots to Innerleithen then over to St Mary's Loch (the eastern part was like glass) past the Grey Mare's Tail to Moffat. Coffee and a fried egg roll at the Cafe Ariete. Then back up the 701 to home.

On the way down, there was lot of shotgun fodder around. Much more than you'd expect at this time of year even. Had a couple of near misses. Then just south of Broughton a hen pheasant broke cover on the other side of the road. I was doing about 60 ish and I know what a mess these beasties can make so I prayed it would freeze or double back and backed off the throttle a bit ...

Aaargh. It tried to fly out of danger. Straight towards me. A very solid "thwack". I looked down and there it was looking up at me from the junction of the crankcase and the offside barrel. Looking very glassy eyed and the contents of its crop and various other bits spread around the lower part of the bike.

A couple of cars passed me going the other way. At least one saw the decoration and gave a double take. The bird dropped away before I could come to a halt. So it's road kill now. Had me sweating for a micro second though!

One less for the shotgun brigade. It was a double barrel that got it anyway I s'pose.

Yes there's a lot of wildlife arouund at the moment and loads of roadkill as a result. The juvenile pheasants in particular haven't yet worked out that wandering around roads is not a 'good thing'.

Plus there's a few more dozy old bunnies reaching the end of the road now. So they too are getting squashed. Even seen some dead stoats and hedgehogs on the roads of late.

Could be due to the local cooncil finally getting around to cutting back the verges too.

Ah the joys of country life.

A guy I work with took a pheasant in the head riding down through the borders a couple of years ago - woke up in a ditch with mangled arm/neck/head - was off work for about 6 months (spookily until sick pay almost expired) before coming back.

Bleedin pheasants!
One took ou tthe indicator on my MZ on the knockhill road a few years back. Haven't got one with the GS yet but whilst on Shetland I hit a wagtail which remained wedged between the front wishbone and barrel for the rest of the trip. Was well cooked by the time I found it....

Oh and at this time of year watch out for kamikaze deer guys, particularly in the evinings and mornings - fit a deer whistle!

I just missed an otter a couple of weeks back. En route for Braemar in the dark one Friday night with my son following on the VFR; we'd just crossed the Bailey bridge on the A93, North of Blairgowrie when I saw the long brown beast walking across the road. If we'd got there a few seconds earlier it would have been a squashed otter.

i was up that way over the weekend, in a fiesta van tho  the road from loch mary to moffat is a good un :thumb2 had a few close calls with the birds as well. No hits tho :clap

took out three last year, two on the bike and one in the van
