Local dealer (who didn't supply the bike or fit the first replacement engine cover under warranty) submitted a "goodwill" claim on my behalf for the second corroded engine cover and the fuel pump controller that failed in Austria.

They have offered 50% of the cost of parts. Has anyone achieved a better deal from them than this? Is it worth a fight to try to get them to increase their offer?

(Bike mileage is 20k, warranty expired May 2007.)

Never had to make a claim under those circumstances but 50% contribution towards parts seems to be the norm from what I've read on other posts.

Playing Devils advocate and seeing as they have no legal requirement to do anything I'd say it was pretty fair. :nenau

Mine was 6 months out of warranty. I had a new battery :mad:1/2 price and then later had new engine\gearbox oil leaks :mad:fixed free. The dealer CW :)(very good) had also not supplied the bike from new. I don't think it makes any difference if the dealer supplied the bike new as it's claimed back from BMW (along with the dealers %).
As these (and 1 or 2 other recurring faults) are plainly design problems, they should be at no cost to you. A letter to BMW may swing it if are bothered.

Chris, my only point in raising that the dealer didn't supply the bike was to make it clear that they weren't "responsible" in any way for the problems.

Chris and Thunder, I switch between feeling thoroughly annoyed that my round the world bike has failed just out of warranty because of known problems, and thinking that it's a two year warranty, and there will always be occasiosn when somethign happens just past the deadline, so I should be grateful for anything. It's sunny today (and the Scottish are just about to get hammered at Murrayfield :D), so I'm in a good mood and tend to think I'm happy with the offer.

If it's soemthign mor emajor - especially the dreaded gearbox oil leaks of final drive meltdown - I'll be expecting, and ready to fight for, something rather more generous from BMW.

If you get a goodwill contribution you also get the manufacturers warranty on the part. No contribution from you means no warranty from them. Sometimes a 100% goodwill contribution the manufacturer isn't what's best for you as a consumer :augie

(Oil leaks repaired as goodwill)
Does this mean my oil seals are not warranted:eek:, AND does it mean that the workmanship (labour) in fitting them is?:bounce1

Within your warranty you should be ok. Mine's out of warranty. :( If yours is still in warranty, I'd suggest about a month before expiry you have a damn good inspection all round.

Having said that, BM do seem to have done a few out of warranty as goodwill.

An update: The service manager at the dealers agreed that BMW's offer was somewhat underwhelming. He said he'd "sort me out" on the labour charges for replacing the engine cover.

After a quick chat about how I'd get 50% of the parts cost back for the fuel pump controller (replaced in Austria, 50% of cost is about £20) he said he'd fit the cover for free (quoted price for this is £99). So, all in all, between BMW GB and the helpful dealers, I'm actually reasonably happy now!

I might buy a new one next year after all...
