I have a pair of Alpinestars Primaloft gore-tex gloves.
I bought them back in 2008 from a motorcycle shop in Tamworth which was near a bridge (dont know the name of the shop) They were in a clearance bin for £50.
I have not used them that much over the years, but the last 2 or 3 years i have used them more as i started to ride more in the winter.
I'm not sure how long gore tex lasts in staying waterproof in gloves, so have just bought a new pair of Richa Arctic gore-tex gloves which cost me £103.40 (discounted price).
The Alpinestars gloves are a good glove, but with them being 16 years old i was thinking the way newer gloves are made now they must be better.
What are others thoughts on using older gloves, is there an age they get to where you replace them no matter how much or little use they have had.

The Richa Arctic Gore-Tex are on the Right the Alpinestars Primaloft Gore-Tex gloves on the Left.

I don't base it on age, simply on whether they still work for what I bought them for. Are my 'rain gloves' still waterproof? Do winter gloves still keep my hands warm ? Etc
Generally, my go to glove have been some BMW goretex ones. Probably about 12 yrs old. They now 'feel damp' inside when it rains....they actually aren't damp, they just now make my hands cold so time for some new ones as something has altered (Insultaion breakdown? )

My finger tips are feeling cold in these gloves.

Is that a change in you or the glove? I have way too many pairs of gloves...they're one of those things that seldom live up to their billing...probably why I've clung onto the BMW ones for so long.

Should be getting out again this week, so i will be able to try the Richa gloves to see if there any better for me.
It could be me and not the gloves. i dont know yet, but time will tell once i start using the new ones. I could use the Alpinestars for Spring & Autumn with the Richa for winter. I have 2 pairs of summer gloves to.

I am looking for a pair of waterproof summer gloves to keep on the bike just in case. any thought on this anyone ?

Personally, if warmth is the priority, I'd recommend the RST Paragon gloves. I have a pair of Held Air'N'dry Goretex gloves which are great 3 season gloves but nothing I've tried over the years has been as effective at keeping my digits warm (and well protected) as the RSTs.

Those Ritcha gloves are pretty shite tbh, I’ve got a pair, quite thick padded insulation that would lead you to believe they will keep your hands warm when it’s cold.....they won’t. And gore tex which would lead you to believe they will keep you dry when it rains, again they wont, got caught out with them riding over the Pyrenees about two hours into the rain, took hands out to take some pictures and managed to pull all the stuffing out and couldn’t get hands back in, absolutely saturated! Probably why they are only a hundred quid or so.

Got Held Air&Dry gore tex which aren’t really a winter glove but really do keep your hands warm when it’s cold, also dry in the heaviest of rain.

I don’t keep a list of when or where I bought my gloves. I keep using them until they fail or just get too tatty; then I buy another pair.

Some tatty looking ones I have sold or given away on the forum, with a suggestion that the new owner can use them as an emergency spare set or for off-road riding.

What I do have though is an appropriate choice of gloves, having long ago given up trying to find one pair of gloves that will do it all. That is no different to owning a choice of jackets or boots, appropriate to the weather or likely use. Again, from time to time, I’ll churn these through the forum’s ’For Sale’ section. Someone will get a bargain and I’ll get some pounds to put towards a newer item or to spend in the pub.

PS As with anything, every man and his dog will have their favourite and / or the ones they’ll curse, See your thread on heated clothing. Gloves are definitely no exception to the basic rule.

Same here which is why I still appear to have a cardboard box full of the damned things! Once they start leaking or get worn, I buy another and consign the old ones to my "glove box". A quick rummage through and I'm amazed at how many I've got through over the years. Some stand outs for performance and comfort include the cheap and cheerful Richa Carbon/Kevlar winter gloves, some Five summer W/P gloves , and my current pairs including the Held and RST ones. Longest lasting was a WP pair of Swift leather/carbon gauntlet racing gloves which I wore for almost 10 years before the water seemed to get though almost before it started raining. It's good to have a mix of gloves , especially some short summer ones (in both senses of the word).

Using heated grips with Goretex in the rain will reverse the vapour transfer effect of Goretex. Result wet hands.

Both my old Alpinestars and my new Richa gloves have been left on the table in the snug for a couple of days. I just tried on both pairs and the new Richa Arctic gloves felt warmer as soon as i put them on. So this has me thinking that the thermal layer in the Richa gloves is better than the Alpinestars gloves.

You now need to put one make on your left hand and the other on your right and compare. Then reverse again. Taking careful notes, preferably on a spreadsheet.

If only you had a random third glove as a control or were able to do it blind, so as to rule out unconscious biases.

Hark at you bloody snug.
You live in a pub.

Both of my GSD's 🐶 just tried them on and they both said the Richa ones were warmer :ROFLMAO:

I purchased a pair of Rukka Virium Gore-Tex gloves last week from the Infinity stand at the NEC show. Given they are only a three season glove, they kept my pinkies lovely and warm in conjunction with the oem heated grips on my naked Triumph today, even though the outside air temp never got above 7 deg C.

£140 well spent

I will not generally replace gear (excluding helmets) unless it no longer does the job it's intended to a reasonable standard. I've biked since I was young, but got back into them about 7 years ago after retiring and having more time. Since then I bought good gear first time round, and other than a helmet I've not replaced anything, but my cardo has had a new mic.
