I want a Goretex bivvy bag for our camping trip to Italy in August. Not going to bother with a tent, and if the weather's crap, we'll book into a hotel.

Don't really want some tatty old ex army thing of Ebay.... any recommendations for suppliers.... hopefully not to expensive!

Thanks

Will

Expectations...

Not going to bother with a tent, and if the weather's crap, we'll book into a hotel.

I agree with this. When goretex bivvies were the latest thing, we expected them to be brilliant. In the open, in anything above light rain, I find that the conflict between the moisture from your body (and your probably damp clothes) trying to escape, and the rain trying to get in, results in some kind of stalemate so your own humidity doesn't escape quite as they describe in the marketing blurb...

Great as a back-up though because of their compact nature - add a lightweight tarp to string above you and you might stay dry....

used them a lot in ni whilst in the army spent days living in them in ditches and all sorts of weather with no problems, brilliant bits of kit if looked after well :thumb

Check out Duluth bedrolls - they're expensive and have to be imported from the USA but you can roll up your sleepmat/sleeping bag in one add a lightweight tarp and you're sorted in virtually any conditions sorry i don't have their website address but a search will find it for you, also see the reviews on the Bushcraft UK forums cheers mike PS I've just ordered one for canoeing, camping, and motorbiking trips.

Field & Trek have a promotion on tents just now and have the Terra Nova Laserlite on offer: £188 :thumb

Laserlite

It is as light as most bivi-bags, but has the full functionality of a tent.

The only extra I would recommend, is the addition of a groundsheet - the ones fitted to these super-lightweight tents are prone to stone damage.

ebay is probably the cheapest place to pick up an army surplus bag, new or used. There are quite a few army surplus suppliers selling stuff, which is either split new or in excellent condition. I've bought myself some brand new goretex waterproofs and socks for next to nowt. Silvermans has got to be the most expensive army surplus store in the world!

I'd go for the Terra Nova tent recommended above though.

Brilliant!

Cheers mates! Loads of good leads there. Not yet decided which I'm going for but one of those suggested will fit the bill.

This site as ever, is brill!
