All,

Can anyone recommend a campsite that would be good for exploring the Gorges Du Tarn area?

It'll just be moi, GS and a tent :)

Cheers,

There's actually quite a lot of them dotted around the Gorge area. See http://www.cevennes.co.uk/camping/

Now if you really want to get off the beaten track but still be within jumping distance of the Gorge then I can recommend Camping la Garde in the village of Saint Germain de Calberte. It's just to the East and on the edge of the Parc National des Cevennes and to get to the Gorge you ride up and over the Plateau with magnificent views down into both Gorges. You can then follow the route of the Gorge as it winds it's merry way before turning and running East for a short while on the main drag before turning off on a side road that winds it's way through the Parc back to Saint Germain. It's a terrific day trip.

The exact route from Saint Germain de Calberte is to head south out of the village a kilometre or so and then turn right onto the D13 signposted Barre des Cevennes. This road leads you up onto the plateau (Causse Mejean). Follow the D996 to Meyrueis and Le Rozier. You're in Gorges de la Jonte country now.

From here, South to D29 which branches off SouthWest onto the D110 as far as Millau and join the Gorge du Tarne.

Follow the Gorge North (right) as far as Florac and leave on the N106 until you see a right turn for the D984. Follow this back to Saint Germain de Calberte.

It's a good days ride because you'll be stopping every few minutes to take photographs LOL. By the way, you can follow this route in Google Street View if you wish.

Loads of them and all good.
Near Millau is nice you can walk into the town for a pint.
We were here last month.

I got back from doing the gorge du tarn last week, stunning, don,t know about you but i like a clean quieter site with no screaming kids everywhere,if this is your requirement also try aguessac,it,s about 4 miles north of millau, right on the edge of the gorge, there,s a smashing campsite in the village, spotless, all brand new showers, toilets, etc,it,s signposted from the road so you can,t miss it,also has a small bar with eating area on site and he does steak/chips/snacks etc, there,s also a small supermarket at the entrance to the site and the lady keeps all the canned beer in a cooler,a must if your a beer drinker like me,the site is situated on the edge of the river with stunning views, and the guy wouldn,t let me pitch until he,d cut the grass for me,took him 5 mins on his ride on mower, cost 18e a nighjt for two,10 e a night for one, couldn,t fault it one bit,

give it a try

regards

Andy
