Gorges Du Tarn Info

All,
We're planning on heading to the Gorges Du Tarn in early August. I've never been to this area before so it's an 'unknown quantity' as it were, but I've heard nothing but good reports about it. I've used the search function on the forum and turned up some good, but also surprisingly little, info.
Therefore I'm asking if anyone could shed a little more light on the area. I'm looking for a nice, quiet campsite preferably near the river and preferably within walking distance of a town/village. I didn't realise how big an area it actually is until I looked on Google Maps so any personal recommendations would be much appreciated

Camp Site next to the River

Hi just searched my box of Trip info, for the following Camp Site, where we pitched our tent next to the River, shaded by trees, important if your going in August!,quiet site, i remember washing all our clothes as we were half way through a two week tour and hanging then up to dry on Guy Ropes attached to the Pine Trees, Camping de Peyrelade 12640 Riviere Sur Tarn, tel: 0565626254
Tarn Gorges incredible area for sight-seeing, frustrating and a bit slow going for Motos owing to the amount of Camper Vans on the roads! enjoy if you have time to enjoy.

Have passed through the Cévennes, staying one night each time, on four previous occasions. At the end of June myself and 5 friends are off there for a full week departing on the 6th of June which is the first day of the French school holidays. For the first time we'll not be camping but renting a modest Gite with room for 6. This is costing a grand sum of €300, for the week, split between us! It's costing me more to kennel my dog whilst I'm away. OK, we'll have to eat out or self cater but at that price too good to pass. Admittedly the following week it would of cost €600.

Last time there we stayed at the Camping Municipal in Le Rozier. When we were there it was quiet but not sure what it will be like in August, we avoid the school holidays as the roads are much clearer. The town has food and there is a river close by.

Prior to that myself and my partner stayed in Florac in a very nice campsite where there were no structured pitches, you just put your tent up where you liked. Very quite spot beside a nice stream was our choice, prefect. This was quite a few years ago and regrettably I wouldn't be able to pinpoint the place on the map. It will probably have changed out of all recognition or disappeared entirely by now anyway.

Might be worth you downloading archies camping POI file. Has been very useful for previous tours.

There are some fantastic roads to be discovered, depends on what sort of riding you enjoy. The D901 is one of my all time favourites and we have routes that incorporate this in both directions on two separate days this time around.

Sorry, by this I meant that we were departing the Cévennes and heading home. i.e. we're there for the week preceding the holiday season.

Renting a canoe for an afternoon, or even a full day, is a great way to unwind.

Lots to see and do in the area. The narrow road up the gorge will be 'tres dodgy' in early August with wobbling tourists and minibuses towing canoe trailers driven by students with a death wish. Also very hot, there are lots of shady campsites but you may have to go a little further afield to find one that is not full.

Millau and Florac are nice towns.

I should know better really, that ain't gonna happen, is it!

I'll be looking a bit further afield.

As an aside, if anyone is looking for a nice campsite in the Ardeche region I can thoroughly recommend Camping La Pinède en Provence. It's about 20~30 mins from the end of the Ardeche Gorge and as such is a lot quieter. We stopped there last August, I booked 2 nights just so we had somewhere to stop on the first night and planned to move on. We liked it so much we stayed there for the full 2 weeks. The owner is a biker and can recommend some good roads and places to go. As always we tried our best to speak the language and (as I've always found) the owner and staff couldn't do enough to help us, speaking both French and English in return (mostly English it has to be said, as our French is not that good)

Hi,

Not sure if this is a bit late but I've stayed at this place a couple of times abotiu 10 years ago and it was fairly basic but quiet with facilities. They also speak English

It's just outside of a village called Barre des Cevennes which in turn is about 15 mins South of Florac ie. slightly out of the way but close enough to be convenient.

Sounds like a great trip!
