How does a beer festival work? is the object to try as many different beers as possible and kind of choose a new tipple for the future? the reason I ask is I've often wondered how anyone can remember which they have enjoyed or not, even if you are drinking halves you must end up rolling drunk.

I'm speaking as someone who is a w@nk drinker in fairness but I am curious

I tend to try as many new beers as I can - I prefer darker beers, stouts and porters.
You get a beer list when you go in, so you can take a pen and make notes (beard and woolly jumper optional)...
You get a choice of pint or half glass and some festivals even sell beer in 1/3 pint measures.
It is also acceptable to take your own snacks etc to nibble on to keep your strength up.
Sometimes you buy tokens to exchange for your beer, sometimes it's just cash.

Tring - Gunpowder Bell 4.2%
Tyne Bank - Southern Star 5.0%
Wylam - Galena 4.4%

Ciders:

Westcroft - Janet's Jungle Juice 6.0%
Heck's - Fair Maid of Devon 6.5%
Broadoak - Moonshine 7.5%

It was a really good Festival... every beer was on handpump and in excellent condition.
The pies were from Kendall's butchers in Pateley Bridge... to die for

There were a few odd characters about, but I suppose that's to be expected...
