Am I going to cause any damage if I leave it for the garage to do when they fit new tyres in another couple of thousand miles? Or should I get it done asap?

It'll get messy, and may contanimate your brakes, ruining your pads -

Doesn't take long to do.

Undo the wheel spindle and pull it out, undo brale caliper bolts, undo the fork brace pinch bolts. Pull down and remove the lower leg, remove old seal/ replace with new one. Pour the new oil in the lower leg, then slide lower leg back in place. Retighten bolts . :thumb

Hey... and don't forget re-check those pinch bolts.

Oh well, there goes my fiddling with auxilliary light at the weekend :(
Thanks for the info chaps. Any issues removing the old seal & dust cover? Screwdriver it out? Will I bugger the dust seal on removal? New one slide in easy? Any special tools? How much/what type of oil. Any point in replacing oil in both forks at the same time?
Thanks again :thumb

Shouldn't bugger the dust seal -

circlip on top of the seal -

470cc of oil , 10w will do -

up to you if you want to replace the oil in the other leg , in an ideal world yes, in the real world, who gives a feck :D

How runny?

10w will do -
Just one more question please,
Seeing as I won`t be bothering to replace oil in good fork, is 10w same visc as OE fitment? If not, what is? Or prolly doesn`t matter, cos not for damping?
Ta :bounce1

err, yes .

Sorry, bit of a mouthful that wasn`t it :D
So that`ll be, yes 10w=OE and prolly doesn`t matter.
tankuverymuch sir :thumb

Instead of removing the lower fork leg you can remove the top fork tube, just undo the nut fixing it to the top triple clamp, push the tube forward, and slide it up and out. This avoids messing with the wheel, caliper and fork brace (leave those pinch bolts alone! :nono ). Access to the seal is a bit more awkward if you do it this way, but not too bad - it's a 15 minute job. :thumb

I used an L shaped pry bar to fish the old seal out, after bending 2 big screwdrivers! :spitfire The new seal presses in more easily, use a big socket as a drift.

You've probably only lost a thimblefull of oil through the seal leaking, so you could just leave the old oil in there. If it ain't broke...

There's a tiny black allen-head screw at the top of the fork tube, undo it and re-tighten after installation to bleed out the air pressure from the fork.

Give me a shout if you want a hand. :beerjug:

It goes in even more easily if you put the seal in the freezer for a while and warm the top of the fork slider with a heat gun.....a very light tap does it. :)

Thanks Ian :thumb
Ok then, freezer....spanners.....pry bars........oil......wooly hat.....penguins...shed.........aaand we`re off! :D I may be some time...

Ace, job done, easy! :thumb
Easy except for having to borrow a 6 sided 14mm socket drive from my neighbour to get the fork top nut off when my 12 sided cheapo tried to round the nut :spitfire
Thanks for the advice folks, I`m now off to fry the grey matter with auto switch wiring now  Right then, where`s the search button :D
