I've just bought a used 2610 and all I got with it was a car power lead and speaker, a holder thing and a 256mb card.

All I know about GPS is what the letters stand for, so what do I need for bike use? Ok, some bits are obvious, like bar mount etc, but mention them anyway.

There is no map CD or anything like that, so do I download them?

:o My lack of knowledge is pretty poor but got to start somewhere I suppose.....

You should have got the map CD, that is essential. I would suggest getting in touch with the vendor to see if they can supply it. Failing that, you will need to contact Garmin to get the CD's. You will also need the original unlock code so that you can use the CD's on your PC. Were you given this by the vendor?

Nope, didn't get any CD's and didn't know to ask...bugger.

I'll try to get hold of the seller or contact Garmin.

So, is the code for the maps or for the unit itself?

you need the unlock codes to get the PC to talk to the gps.

You may have difficulty in getting support from Garmin if items are missing, especially if it was sold on eBay. If the unit is registered with Garmin as stolen, you are fresh out of luck.

Garmin have a 'policy' concerning units sold as used on eBay etc (small print on their website, see extract below) You need to have the sellers i.d. to transfer ownership onto their database when you call Garmin for support. They may send you new CD's for mapsource if you ask nicely along with the unlock code via email. The unlock code relates to the unique serial number of your GPS unit and will not work with other units. You also need a separate installer CD as well as the mapsource CD's, you can't just bung mapsource disk 1 into the drive and load it.

From their website:

Q. Does Garmin have any authorized dealers on eBay or any other online auction site?
A. Garmin does not have any authorized dealers that sell new products directly on online auction sites. Any purchases made through online auction sites are on a ”buyer beware” basis. A copy of the original sales receipt is required as the proof of purchase for warranty repairs. Online auction confirmations are not accepted for warranty verification and Garmin will not replace any missing components from any package purchased through an online auction.

I bought a used BMW Navigator 2 (same as 2610) from eBay last year and the initial guy I spoke to was a complete arse, and wouldn't help. I phoned back and spoke to a different guy called Mark who was really helpful, give him a try and ask very nicely, he might help you out:

Good luck mate. :thumb

A mate of mine has just bought a Tomtom Rider and will soon be selling his hardly used 2610 (probably on eBay) with all CD's, install codes etc. If anyone is thinking of using eBay to buy one, ensure you contact the seller if the advert doesn't include the CD's and accessories and ask if they are included.

Yes, it was good old ebay. I've emailed the guy so I'll wait and see what he says. His feed back was ok so hopefully he is genuine.

I paid by paypal - does this give me any protection if Garmin tell me it is a stolen unit?

Anyway, throwing in a touch of optimism - what else do I need? (Apart from Mapsource and an installer CD :( )

Adam, can you tell me what price your mate is selling his Garmin 2610 ?
I tried to PM you but system will not allow me.

What you need are:

- External speaker with 12/24-volt adapter cable for car usage.

- 12 V cable for MC usage.

- PC/USB interface cable to download maps & routes.

- A/C power adapter to power the unit while connected to your PC.

- CompactFlash memory card. 128 - 2048MB

- MapSource City Navigator Europe CD.

- Unlock code for the map.

You need all this. The expensive thing is the unlock code. The CD is no big problem since you can ask anybody to make a copy for you. Maybe even Garmin will fix a no-charge copy for you.
