Got an urge to visit Gotland, thought was fly to Stockholm, ferry to the island and then hire a car.
Anyone been before? Worth a visit?

Yes, three times.

All very nice, in the summer.

This will be a September/October jaunt.
How did you get there, fly/ride/drive?
Particularly interested in staying in Färo in the north of the island.

I always flew, from Stockholm.

I had two Stockholm based clients who, being Gotlanders, used to decamp down there from midsummer thro’ to mid-August. If they wanted to see me (or me them) then it was like Mohammed and the mountain.

You can’t go far wrong in the whole of the Stockholm archipelago, all be it Gotland is to its south,

PS October can bring you into the storm season.

Thanks Richard.
Flying from Stockholm was my intention then a hire car to the ferry to Färo.

Yes, we’ve been to Gotland. We flew into Arlanda, had a night in the hotel and then flew to Gotland the following day. We stayed near the marina in a lovely little place, Hotell Stenugnen, highly recommended. We toured the island and it is quite dramatic how it changes. Faro is a good place to stay and it is quite close to a fabulous race track (https://gotlandring.com/) build to a very high standard in an old quarry.
When we left, we took the high-speed ferry and had 3 nights in Stockholm before flying back from Arlanda.

It is on our list of places that we have to go back to.

Great information, many thanks!

Baltic trip is dependent on a wedding in Kaunas. I’ve been invited but still haven’t committed to it yet though I’m 90% sure I’ll go.

Very nice Jeremy. Who's getting married, Is it your Lad?

October starts to get rather cool in Lithuania. Having lived on the coast in Klaipeda. Kaunas is likely to be moist but a little warmer, being more inland. On the island, out in the middle of sea, I would imagine it'll be even more 😉 Baltic.

My son from a marriage many years ago. I’ve not seen him since 1984 and still somewhat apprehensive about seeing him after 40 years, hence my ‘reluctance’ to go to Kaunas (he lives there).

I can understand that and relate to in the way. Not that I have had any kids or remotely interested in having them.

I lived in Gotland for about a year, went there to work as a consultant nurse and met my future mother of my children which is a super cliché thing to do in Gotland 😁, had a motorcycle there and also worked driving around the island to peoples homes and various care centers aswell.

Gotland has amazing motorcycle roads, very twisty roads with little traffic trough wonderful scenery. Fårö is easy to get to, there is a ferry that is free that goes often. I can also recommend driving south along the west coast to Hoburgsgubben, the furthest south point on the island, and then back up along the east coast, it only takes you perhaps 3 hours.

Visby is a wonderfully romantic and cozy city, the whole city is a UNESCO World Heritage.

You can DM me if you have any questions about it.

Good travels!

Just a slight edit, I don´t know how to edit the original post: Thought about it and the road aren´t "very" twisty, don´t want to give the wrong impression, though still very nice to drive trough 😁
