Silly question really, but is it possible to conver a GPS III or V which has a US Base map, to a European base map?

hhmm, so It probably wont be worth it then. especially if i want to see road details for whole of UK

Gary I'll stick me neck out and say this...

If you want a GPS to autoroute for you.

You need minimum a quest. Today from GPSW about 360 with the bike kit.

If you can't afford that you could get hold of a s/h GPSV but I don't reckon you'd keep it long before wanting to upgrade...

Just my tuppence worth...

I aquired a GPS III+, and have been using that recently to test, and now I have the R&R software, it's not too bad.
I felt I probably didn't need the turn by turn routing initially, as I'm used to useing Maps or basic instruction, but I discovered that with the GPSIII+ it doesn't have a lot of the smaller roads i travel along.

I like the map feature which shows me where I am compared to whats around, but it's a little frustrating to want to go some where in the country, and it shows you that you are in the middle of no where when you get there and you know your on a road thats older than the unit, which means I have to guess which road to take using the Arrow if I want to go somewhere next.

At the moment for other trips i have slowly managed to work out how to create trips with Weypoints, but I found it a little difficult to navigate when it waits until you are at that point and then tells you to turn.

I have been so used to using Maps and planning routes and sticking basic direction on my Tank, I wanted to see how a GPS could help before I splash out on an expensive unit, then find i don't get on with it and then have to sell it and make a loss. At the moment the main benifit is that i can use it at night.

going back to the main question, the reason i asked is becasue I seem to see GPS V going cheaper in the US than in the UK.

Sorry, I don't agree with this. Yes if you want to tour europe, then the V hasn't enough memory.

However the V will hold all of wales or all of london. If you are happy to plan a route on the PC and then download it and the map, then its fine.

Personally I don't feel any need to blow another 300+ quid to replace mine.

I'd guess a second hand V is from 150 now ?

So would the GPS V, give me more road details (ie minor roads),aand in addition of what functionality you have with the III+ (ie location on a map, goto.. etc) it gives you turn by turn directions?

Never had a problem with my V either, I only upgraded to a quest coz I plan on an overseas adventure this year..............

Not sure about the III+, but I think the V will give similar road detail to the more expensive garmins, certainly arund the UK I've rarely found a road missing (one or two one ways are wrong).

It does routing and directions, but no voice prompts.

Thanks for that, sounds like the "V" would be better for me.
Might be able to get my hands on one for less that £200 (private sale, getting a bit concerned buying something like this off ebay), if so i could sell my III+ on ebay and get a stupid price for it that will off set the cost :) and not upset my person bank manager to much .. :D

I've only just upgraded from the Garmin 3+ to a Garmin V. I used my 3+ in North Africa and all the way to Rumania. I uploaded my route from Garmin Worldmap and there was more than enough memory available. I took the disc with me so I could upload more countries into the unit if I needed to. I think the 3+ and the V are exellent units, simple, cheap and more importantly tough. For overlanding or RTW I would stick with one of these units.

I got my V from GPS Warehouse for £255.

You get what you pay for.

The GPS V was a good unit in its time but for only a little more you can get a lot more features and route calculation and map redraw speed.

I too would recommend a Quest.

I don't understand this. R&R should be showing all the roads...all those with "TarMac" anyway. Mine does.

I which it did, I'm slowly adding dotted lines to the maps as I ride along them so i can actually see the roads.
