Looking for some guidance please.

My secondhand GS came with SPIII, but no maps.
Garmin were very helpful and have registered the unit and given me unlock codes, etc so should be able to get it running. But cost of maps is £140 + £40for card reader.

Would I be better off buying a Quest for £200 instead? SPIII is 5 years old so thought newer unit would be money better spent.

I commute daily so GPS is a bit of a toy - if it hadn't been fitted to the bike, I wouldn't be giving it a second thought.

Any views/opinions very welcome.

Many thanks

Phil

Hi,
£200 is too much.

I may have a streetpilot III available (may I just bought a Zumo 500 from gpsw - I should know in a couple of days - stock problems!). My streetpilot III comes with latest maps, cardreader, two data cards, car bean bag (I think I know where it is - never used). If you want it, make me an offer. Otherwise it ends up on ebay at some point (as long as I have bought a Zumo!).

How did you prove that you hadn't nicked the SPIII? Garmin are balking at giving me a new code cos they can't contact the registered owner.

Al

I agree £200 is too much to get a SP III going.
A Quest would be a better bet.

What sort of use are you going to make of it.

i've recently bought a 2nd Hand Quest of ebay for £99. The Maps aren't the latest, but as it mainly for UK use, I'm really not too bothered. Lets face it the UK roads really don't change that much. I've found a couple of time when new junctions and bypasses have been put in the Maps are wrong, but with minimal common sense (ie I can manage it) its easy to rejoin the route soon. Certainly it'll still be a great toy.

I got my original Garmin V as a toy, but I now regard a GPS as a complete must - but then I have no sense of direction and get lost on the way to the chip shop

Others will comment, but I think the main value of the latest maps is usually in parts of Europe where the coverage isn't complete.

Garmin will sell you an unlock code for the latest City Select mapping for not a lot of money - you just have to get the registered owner (if it was ever registered) to call garmin and let them know that they have sold the unit.

Could be worthwhile?

Al :)

Put on my best 'I'm stuck and need your help' vocie to the lady who answered. Seriuosuly I guess it was because they had the unit as not being previously registred. Anyhow couldnt fault Garmin for their helpfulness.

Only option they offered was going to gps warehouse to buy the maps. It was a US bought unit and originally had North American maps loaded. Why on earth would you remove the maps anyway? Can't understand why the seller did it given he was back in the UK at the time.

Hi Carl

Thanks. How does £80 sound? Don't worry about bean bag - have already got one and wouldn't get used in car as wife is better than any satnav.

Let me know. Would be good to get sorted by w/e if poss as off to the Rugby World Cup in Lens following weekend and am taking navigation lead with mates on the bais that I'm only one with satnav .............

That is fine - I still do not know if I have got a new unit - gps wharehouse had them in stock when I started the order but not when completed it - so it is either on the way to me or they are awaiting new stock.

I should know this week and will let you know either way.

cheers
