Picked up my new car today - promptly got lost. (I've really only 'done' London by the Tube since bike-time is limited .. looks loads different up top!)

The obvious answer to any self respecting Beemer owner would be to get GPS ... but which one?

Powered from the cigarette lighter would be a bonus .. plugged into the auxiliary audio socket so it runs through the speakers would be absolutely astounding.

Any ideas? Suggestions? More importantly, prices so I can start priming the other half for the upcoming January birthday.

Cheers in advance :)

Do a search on;
Garmin StreetPilot 2610
or
Garmin Quest
or
Garmin GPSmap 276C

The BMW Navigator II is a Garmin StreetPilot 2610 with an additional button pad

Garmin 2610 is the one for you. Try Aspid Shop for a good price. You will not be dissapointed.

Why be sorry anyway? You have to use a car to remind yourself how much better a bike is and for when you buy flatpack furniture that won't bungee to the back of the GS!:)

While you are comparing costs etc, don't dismiss the Street Pilot 3 (SP3) - I'm sure it would do what you want. There are some bargains about - eg see here http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=34041

I bought a new SP3 for £400 earlier this year. Second hand ones come for sale pretty regularly, either on this site, e-bay or Exchange & Mart etc.

Thanks for the info, I think the SP3 might be adequate for what I need by the look of it. I don't think I need the latest kit and it's not something I'd be fitting to my bike so it's useage will be minimal.

I don't need to find obscure places, it's usually the places other people find with ease

Anyway, I'm off to Glasgow in about 30mins (sans GPS!) so have a wonderful Christmas and new year. :)

Magellan Road mate 300

As a GPS novice, heres what I found. 2 weeks ago I took the GPS plunge after researching here and elsewhere online.
Bought a Garmin 2610 and am very happy with it. However while I was there the sales guy asked me what I thought about the new Magellan Road mate 300.

I compared it side by side with the 2610 both running together and me doing the equivalent operations on both units simultaneously.

1. Front view on the Magellan is similar size to the Garmin but the unit is only half the depth so is also lighter.

2. Maps on the Magellan are more "attractively" displayed and so easier to read I found.

3. The Magellan has an internal battery so can be used outside of a vehicle also.

4. The Magellan uses SD memory cards which are cheaper to upgrade than compact flash.

5. The Magellan is cheaper than the 2610

So why did I get the 2610 then I hear you ask.... because it's waterproof and I needed my GPS for the GS primarily. But as you wanted yours for the car I 'd definately look at the Magellan. :)
