Ofcom has published a notification that GPS jamming will be in operation during Operation Joint Warrior, a major NATO exercise that is scheduled to take place between 0700hrs October 5th and 2359hrs October 16th.

Jamming will occur at two locations, Feraid Head and Loch Ewe in Sutherland with denial of service likely to affect consumer GPS at any time during the exercise period and jamming events of up to one hours duration at any one time.

The MoD says GPS denial is essential to the training of armed forces personnel. Jamming at last years Joint Warrior exercise was suspended after complaints from fishermen. It was also blamed for loss of internet connectivity as well as mobile phone service and satellite TV interruptions.

My boatie is all tucked up for the winter and I only use the 550 for streaming music to my helmet speakers so think I'll be OK

Go anywhere near an airbase in Russia and your GPS goes AWOL

Don't ask me how I know :nenau

So they can't frisk the fuckers to stop a squaddie from taking his GPS smart phone out to play on an exercise?

What a trotal crock of shit........We're not even allowed to have a phone on our wards, or ANY device with any sort of connectivity....yet the army have to disable some fucking satellites so the squaddies can't cheat and suss out where they are?

FFS ! :blast

The military will still be using the same GPS signals for their own positioning. The usual satellites will still be working all fine and dandy. :D

More to do with Ships and Fast jets.

And the Rastafari....

The Yanks are here already, when I was departing Inverness yesterday morning there was an American fast jet stating his requirements and intentions. His routing of "West, via the lochs, low level, returning high level" didn't clarify that much for ATC!

I went to watch a day of operation warrior this time last year from Faraid head. We saw a frigate lobbing shells from about 3 mile out at targets on the land and the RAF dropped a couple of 2000lb bombs on one of the rocky outcrops - they were mighty impressive, and doing a "show of force" at the assembled dignitaries on Faraid head. It's worth a trip up there if you can and if you need sat nav to navigate around the north of Scotland I would suggest you really shouldn't be allowed out on your own.
