GPS Mapping for South America

[JAAPPS]

I am sure that this is an "old chestnut" of a question, but i am looking for some sort of detailed GPS software that covers South America.
If you know of anything other that the standard World Map, then please let me know... I guess i could use a paper map, but it sort of seems a shame to make my expensive GPS have an easy trip.

According to the Garmin website, there are http://www.garmin.com/cartography/mpc/]Third-Party Mapsource Developers[/URL] which cover Argentina and Chile. I can't find one on there that covers the whole of South America, but other people will know better than me.

You can tell its been a quiet work day in snow bound West Wales.

I'm planning an Argentina/Chile trip and I looked for similar software. I called the third company on the list (last one on the 3rd party providers page). Although my Spanish is OK, I got hold of an english speaker who told me that around Jan time they are releasing a detailed map of Argentina (don't know if it has route planning capability, or if you'll need to use waypoints for all route plans) for Garmin modules, but can only download it to your module and I'm not sure if this means that you can then upload it to your PC. If not you would loose the map once you change maps. Of course, this also means you have to either send the module over there by post orturn up to their offices in Buenos Aires in person! As we are going there any way, we'll probably turn up at the shop before heading into the pampa and patagonian wildeness! For old modules they can send out a memory card for modules that use those. HTH

I believe NavTeq have recently released mapping for Argentina (main cities and highways only). Perhaps Garmin may produce a product sometime....

I joined this forum and managed to follow the instructions. I have now managed to download and open the Argentine/Chilean maps in mapsource.
