Bought a Garmin 2610 recently. I've used in the car but haven't yet got a mounting for the 1200GS.

I know someone who has used a Touratech adaptor (part 040-0663) which fits onto the instrument bracket - the one which allows you to position the GPS unit above the instruments -

http://www.touratech.de/shop_uk/en-us/dept_531.html

However - apparently because the screws on the original bracket are powder coated it is a real B******D to undo the screws - my mate had to drill out the original screws and replace them.

Anyone had any similar experiences? And if so any helpful hints on how to fit this bracket without the hassle of drilling screws out? Feeling a bit pensive about drilling out screws on my new GS and would like to avoid this if possible, but I do like the bracket and where it allows the GPS unit to be fitted. Cheers.

The touratech braket you mention is maybe not the best solution for the 2610.
If you also use the touratech cradle you must have the screen in the highest position and even then you will not be able to see the top of the rev counter. Touratech Germany recomended the use of part number 065-0099 to overcome the screen adjustment. I think I will look at a ram mount on the bar that holds the screen in place.
I did not have any problems removing scews to fit the bracket.

Agree with the comment about the screen position but don't know why you would worry about the tachometer (rev counter) on a GS. I have the Garmin 276C mounted above the instruments using the Touratech parts GPS Handlebar Bracket Adapter 040-0063 and GPS Handlebar Bracket Lockable 065-0088. I have the screen in the mid point and the Bracket Adapter does obscure the top part of the tacho.
But since for me the tacho is of little or no interest when riding, I don't consider this a problem. Maybe it's just me, but a tacho is of curiosity value only - I select gears by the feel of the motor, which varies with load carried and the road condition, hill, etc, and getting above 6000 rpm adds little or no performance in every day terms.
I like the GPS in my eye line, rather than down on the handlebar. You might also check on interference with a tank bag, if you use one.
I might be worth rethinking the issue with the tacho, you might end up concluding as I do that having the GPS at the higher level more than offsets the disadvantage of not seeing the tacho clearly.

Do you mean the 040-0663 bracket, which is the part number I meant (not 040-0063)? And if so did you have any problems fitting it?

I called Touratech today and they advised against using the lockable bracket for the 2610 on the 1200GS - although I have seen it working in practice (if a bit tight...).

I think as you can slide the bracket from left to right, you can position it so that most of the instrumentation can be seen. And the GPS unit is probably more accurate than the speedo anyway.

BTW I saw in IT week today that there is some worry about GPS failing in medium term as many of the satellites are past their sell-by date and not enough new ones are being launched to replace them!?!

Vampire is referring to the positioning of the 276C I don’t know how this differs to the 2610. And I agree loosing vision of the rev counter is not critical but it is not good design either and Touratech GB did not have a clue how well 2610 would fit. It is good to have the GPS high in front to easily see and above the Speedo is perfect. I think there is a better Bracket / cradle solution which could give you full screen adjustment and have full view of the speedo / tacho

If I adjust the 2610 cradle and bracket to have the screen in the midway position I would loose sight of the top of the Speedo. I have the cradle which is not lockable, because of the way it hinges you need space between the cradle and screen to get the GPS in and out.
The reason I went this way is I already had the Touratech 2610 cradle.

If you are concerned about security of the GPS on the Touratech unlockable cradle, it is possible to use a small padlock to lock the hinge mechanisium.

Let us know your solution.

Steve

Here is a photo of my GPS setup, showing the 276C on the lockable Touratech mount above the instruments, and where I have mounted the UHF radio on the handlebar.
