Gps + Music on PDA - or seperate

I've managed to get Tom Tom 3 installed and working on my Ipaq 4100 (bluetooth gps).

I intend to go the autocom 7 route (bike to bike / mobile / gps / music)

Should i go for independant mp3 player or can i get a small quantity on the pda, in which case where does it store (the tt3 seems to take up most of the sd card)

Does any setup automatically cut the music when a voice command comes from the gps?

Slowly in english please gents, loading the TT3 was about my limit.

Bigger SD card seems to be in order mate....could be costly if you want to store a lot...I have an ipaq 5450 but don't use it for music, I stick to the iPod - 40GB of space to muck around with....

I did use this solution and something to be aware of; the Autocom has no built in amplifier and the integral WMA player is not very loud. I found it to be pretty useless at greater than 70 mph. I now use a Starcom which does amplify it.

Without stirring up a whole new hornets nest, do you rate the starcom over the autocom Patch?

Er, yes it does.

I've been puzzled by it 'cos Autocom say it's not amplified, but let me put it this way...

If I plug my Earplug monitors directly into my Minidisc player, I have to run it at top volume to be audible at 80mph.......but if I plug the minidisc into the Autocom, then my monitors into the autocom lead (adpated by Ultimate ear intot he Autocom loom) , I have to turn down the Minidisc 'cos it's too loud.

So it's amplified, QED.



Steve.....have you tried fiddling about with your PDA to see how it runs both Tom-tom and music??

It may well slow down a lot and be jerky, either in MP3 playback or in the mapping software......

Personally I think I'd go for a dedicated MP3 player...whether it be something similar to an Ipod (but not an actual one 'cos they're overpriced badged marketing gizmos) or a minidisc player.

Then you'll be able to tootle around with sounds without having to hook up your Autocom (with my set up that's way easier to do) and will also be able to hear your sounds off the bike.

For me yes I do.

Mainly I pillion with my daughter, shes only 6 and couldn't speak loud enough to operate the autocom VOX, if I set it low enough for her it would cut in at low speeds.

The duplex system in the Starcom suits us better and I have not experienced any issue with the wind noise reported elsewhere once I had the volume set right.

I considered this, but to get a decent selection of MP3s, plus the maps I wanted, would mean a ginormous memory card.

This, together with the disadvantage that you can't have both the MP3 player and TomTom running at the same time (or at least, producing sound), meant I went for just TomTom. It's more important to know where I am, and I can enjoy the best sound system in the world, i.e. the one in my head.

You can feed two sound signals through an autocom.....they supply a twin stereo jack adaptor to put phone and mp3 or phone, gps etc into the same channel.

Autocom charge about £345.34 for it, or you can get one from maplins for thruppence.

Have been readiing this thread with interest and wondered if you had found the following PDA forum? I use the Garmin ique forum and have found it pretty helpful regarding PDA's etc.

I too have thought about whether to play music through the PDA or get an MP3 player. The iRiver 120 seems to get some good reviews regarding sound quality and includes an FM radio as well as being able to store pictures, map data etc. Only thing is I'm not sure how I would go about getting the mapdata from the iRiver to the Ique...mmmm.

Bought two power leads at the NEC - £35

Was shown their latest addition, a dummy battery for Kenwood or Icom which powers the radio and can be swapped by a normal battery for off-bike use. I had to pick McShouty up of the floor when they told us the price on it

Cut out the middle Fanum, Maplins on t'internet are a better bet for stuff like this, if you don't mind paying more for postage... here

They can be v. poor about keeping stocks of these sort of things up to scratch.

Try a search for "3.5mm plug 2 socket" for variations.

And it's also an excuse to order more toys - "Well since I was paying for the postage..."
