Without entering into an arguement over whether GPS should be allowed on a bike or not, I have decided to lose the tank bag and jump helmet first into the 21st Century!

All I'm after is to know which basic GPS unit (maybe an older model?) would be suitable for me. :nenau

I most importantly want a unit that allows me the night before to 'download' a route of new and for me, yet discovered and indirect, B-road twisties and A road blasts!

I guess I need a M/cycle orientated one so it can get wet and deal with my gloved fingers. Also needs a mount and possible charger?

I presume that all bike GPS can be used in the car to 1) justify the expendidture to the misses, 2) prevent us from getting closer to a divorce every time to she fails to navigate even the most basic route!

If anyone can recommend any GPS best sellers that fit the above, I would be most grateful

Hello Ca smith 78,

Try using the 'Search' function at the top of the screen - there are plenty of people who have asked the same question :thumb

FWIW - most units can be transferred to the car; check that whichever unit you buy is waterproof as plenty aren't; older models may look like bargains but this is a fast developing market and newer models have better features and are easier to use, plus they have current supported software.

IMHO - the Garmin Quest I will fulfill all your needs and should cost less than £250 plus the mounts :beerjug:

What about this one?

:D Waterproof
:D No batteries / licence nor updates required
:D Within Budget
:D Light weight
:D Rugged
:D Reliable
:D M/cycle orientated but can be switched for foot/horse/bicyclette/boat/car use
:D Does not require a mount
..sorry...just couldn't resist it! ;) :duck:

Thanks Dave,

It seems to be just what I was after.

Can you confirm that it has the functionality to load my defined route then show me as I ride it, rather than the unit calculating the most direct / quickest?

Yep - it does this. You prepare the route in advance on your computer using the Mapsource application that comes with it. You then transfer this route to the GPS and it guides you along the route via on screen instructions/maps and voice. I bought one of these and it does the job perfectly as an introduction to GPS. The unit itself is considerably larger and slower than newer models, but does everything it syas on the tin and I have been happy with it.

Ditto.
Everything to use it on the bike or in the car is included.
It may be old hat but does what I want.

If you can wait, I'd say hold on for a month or 2 or 3. There's a new player coming to the motorcycle GPS market, cheaper, faster and better than what's out there at this moment....

  • How does it work whilst on the move?
  • Is it self contained or does it in fact require the purchase of other components?
  • Are these parts waterproof as well?
  • Can it be used whilst riding "heads up" allowing you to keep good observation on the road
  • Can it be operated with one gloved hand whilst on the move?
  • Can it be operated by the back seat driver/rider on the move?

;)

It's just I'm sworn to secrecy.... been in contact with the manufacturer for a while, looking for my feedback.... They say about 2-3 months, but we all know how that goes.

Mike, I know Phillips are joining the GPS market at the back end of this year, but I doubt it will be Bike oriented, just hope its better than the Rider…

Just give us something; we can badger you for the rest :D

It's a bike special, and looks on paper better and cheaper than the Rider.

All I'll say is BT (phone and comms), waterproof, super fast, SiRFstarIII reciever (you can receive signal inside), POI downloadable, and TMC.

All cheaper than anyone else.

Don't even try speculating brands, since I'll just ignore... :P

I'll let you guys know when I receive the beta unit..

Ok Mike, just one question, then I’ll leave you alone, does it have PC mapping!

Basic for the moment. It's one of the points I mentioned to them, and it's been taken into account. So don't know what they're planning.

Personally, what I suggested, since producing one is very expensive at this stage of the game, is to tie-in with one of the big web based mapping programs. Will see...

Well done Mike :thumb

viamichelin is a good one for Europe,

Been in touch with them, but they can't see much in the biker market. But they say that their GPS can be used for bikes (but not watertight).
