Im off for a bit of a lazy adventure/organized tour very soon, and i am using the time out there to plan and scout out the idea of doing the same trip again but solo.

Morroco is the place,i know is not quite the wild frontier anymore.....but we have all got to start our round the world daydream somewhere.

Im thinking, that a GPS system would be an expensive luxury with not a huge amount of help once into the more isolated area's,and maybe its better to rely on the old fashioned map reading/compass bearings....is this a wrong assumption....or will a GPS provide good coverage and value once dodging camels,or would an digital compass/trekking GPS be better......any ideas?

( I normally carry a silva compass at least for direction finding )

bugger...just noticed the excellent info about Morroco after asking about GPS.....i suppose now that the coverage is answered,i will just have to think if its worth spending the money on a GPS,or stay with my proven map reading.

The benefit of having a GPS with the map datum and easily readable lat / long (or whatever your map shows) is that it can show exactly where you are, rather than where you think you are. As long as you don't mix up the conversion, and if the GPS has world map on then there'll be less chance of confusion.

Also, assuming you want to go in a certain direction, then the GPS will show true / mag heading (when moving) irrespective of the amount of ferrous material near to it eg a motorbike
