GPS power lead into power takeoff socket, Does it need an inline fuse?

Need? I dunno, but look at it this way: a GPS is an expensive device and a fuse placed inline may help to protect it. The fuse cannot hurt and is not expensive. Mine is fused.

I would always fuse an accessory, as close as you can get to the power source.

Even it the accessory never fails, there is always a chance that the lead you install could become trapped/squished by something. A motorcycle battery carries enough amps to start trouble-a-plenty.

If you're taking the feed from an accessory socket, you don't have to, as the protection is in the controller. If however you are wiring direct from the battery (or via a relay from the battery) an inline fuse is a must. As posted above, the fuse should be positioned as close to the battery as possible. If you don't, you're asking for a fire.

I would think not, can anyone confirm this?

Cheers Geoff

My lead still has the original Garmin plug attached which has an internal 2 amp fuse. So if Garmin think it is needed it might be a good idea to use one.

Best advice is YES - fit an in line fuse. I use just a 0.5amp fuse for mine and it's fine. Always carry a spare because they are quite delicate and can break just when you are driving in the dark and the batteries have run out ......:(
