I've bought myself a Garmin GPS V. Can I use the lead that plugs into the fag lighter that comes with it to attach to my GS's power socket, or do I need one with a special BMW plug? If I need a special one, where is a good place to get one?
Thanks, Paul.

You can use the lead, but it won't fit unless it's one of those dual purpose jobbies (usually with a removeable red collar on the end). If it's a straightforward cigar lighter plug, you can get a converter from Touratech (probably from other places as well).....

Mike:)

I have just been speaking to Rainbow about the same. The options are -

1. Get an adaptor as above
2. Cut the end of the 'normal' cigarette lighter cable supplied & put a BMW type plug on the end. Rainbow stock these at about £8
3. Buy another Garmin cable (as supplied) for £15 & plug for £8 so that you can keep the original cable for the car
4. Use rechargeable batteries :D

Charles

Thanks for the replies. I looked on the Touratech website but couldn't find an adaptor. I think I'll buy another cable and a BMW plug and make up a lead.
Cheers, Paul.

You forgot option 5. by a garmin lead without the plug on the end and connect that directly to the battery.

It works fine for me:D

I'm on the same route !!, a spare cable with one end bare and hard wire into system, I believe the connection on the plug will cause problems with shut down on the unit.

other threads suggest a 0.5Amp fuse, blade type hard wired in.

How are you finding the V ?, still can't make up my mind ,if the extra for for the SPIII is really worth £300 for the first dip into GPS.

Thanks, Gary.

I'm really impressed with the V. It's my first venture into GPS, and I figured £200 was enough to spend. If the difference to the III wasn't so much, I think that I would have gone for that instead. I think the Streetpilot III is worth £500, but after Xmas, I couldn't really afford that much. That is of course unless someone made the other decision & bought the III, and now wants to swap with me for my V & £200 :D
The main problem with the V will be the lack of memory, I think.
I registered my software last night & have had an e-mail confirming that I will be sent City Select 6.0 when they have it in stock.

Charles
