I know Doc likes to try things new in Germany.

The latest issue of the German Ride magazine has a number suggestions and GPX files. I’ll download them and share them here at some point.

Where is it, mate?

AI says:

Franconia (Franken) is a distinct cultural region in Germany, primarily located in northern Bavaria, known for its historic cities like Nuremberg, Bamberg, and Würzburg, as well as picturesque landscapes such as Franconian Switzerland. It is characterized by medieval architecture, a strong, distinct local identity, and renowned culinary traditions.

Key Aspects of Franconia:
  • Location: Primarily Northern Bavaria (Upper, Middle, and Lower Franconia), with parts extending into Baden-Württemberg, Thuringia, and Hesse.
  • Major Cities: Nuremberg (historic city with imperial castle), Würzburg (known for wine and the Residence palace), and Bamberg (UNESCO World Heritage town).
  • Culture & Identity:
Distinct from the southern Bavaria ("Old Bavaria") region, with its own history as one of the original stem duchies of Germany, distinct traditions, and a red-and-white regional flag.
    • Highlights: Rich in castles, palaces (e.g., Kaiserburg Nürnberg), and medieval architecture (e.g., Rothenburg ob der Tauber).
    • Culinary: Famous for hearty dishes like Schäufele (pork shoulder) and, particularly in Upper Franconia, a dense concentration of breweries and smoked beer

As a bit of a taster, here’s the suggested jaunts. Should anyone want to ride the lot, I think the total length is something like 2,000 km (1,250 miles). It’s a big country, Germany.

When I share the routes, I’ll try to remember to make them the same colour.

Thanks Richard i shall have a look.

I’ll tidy it up, colour coding the routes to match the article.

Done. When the linked MyRoute file opens, you’ll maybe need to scroll out to see the individually coloured routes.

is it just me or does the MRA link not give the correct mapping? I just get a single waypoint in Rothenburg

That file is just the several tracks colour coded to (near enough) match the route colours in the article.

I created a route with just one waypoint, Rothenburg. I then used the ‘routes’ option in MyRoute to superimpose the tracks on top. If you zoom out a bit, the coloured tracks should (I hope) appear. Let me know, please.

In the meantime, this should open up a folder with all the routes (I saved them as tracks):

Again, let me know if it works, please.

I can the individual tracks and convert them to routes

I can't see the compilation in technicolor originally posted. Maybe that uses a premium feature. I only use a free account.

I download and save the magazine’s routes as tracks, simply because:

A. It’s usually pretty reliable.

B. It would be rare if I (and I guess anyone else) would use the routes exactly as the author did. Not least, I might well be staying somewhere else.

C. I like to spot the little errors, where the route’s creator probably took the wrong turning, but didn’t then edit the error out for publication.
