Day one

The sun is out and the sky is blue. Excellent.

I had planned to catch a train at about 15:30 and then scoot to St Omer via the motorway. But, with no great delays at the QE2 crossing, nor down the M20 (despite the contra flow and 50 mph limit) I rolled into the Chunnel at 13:45 and was offered the 14:35 crossing, at no extra charge. Happy days.

Unsurprisingly, given that it’s August, the train was full. I spent the crossing In convivial bikermate chat with some Belgians, who were returning to Ghent, having spent a week hooning around north Wales:

Catching the earlier train, meant I was an hour ahead of myself, so I changed tack on arriving at Calais, taking the non-motorway route along the D roads to St Omer:

As everyone knows, the D roads south of Calais are crap, which is why they are empty:

After around an hour I was in St Omer, filling-up ahead of tomorrow’s decent schlep to the Hurtgen. From the fuel station, it’s a short hop to the Ibis Budget. I parked the bike, locked it up, saving a bit of time having checked-in in advance and pre-reserved a room at the back:

A swift change and shower and it’s a short walk up the hill (it’s not the Eiger) and a cut through past the splendid cathedral, to take up residence in the Queen Victoria pub, busy as usual:

More later, I hope.

Safe travels, look forward to the updates....sage words and stunning photos !

As we all know, beer makes you clever. The weather forecast is good (not that I could do much about it if it isn’t) so I’m thinking of not taking the motorway from St Omer to Cambrai tomorrow morning. Instead, I might as well stir my stumps and take a mixture of D and N roads instead. We shall see….

I’m loving the excellent use of the webbing belts on the locks Richard! Having forgotten to remove my lock before moving off at a hotel on one of the original “Wanders” and dropped my GS I dashed around to the front of the hotel for help only to find young Tom in a similar predicament. We decided to keep it our little secret only to find we’d been spotted.

I'd be up for an argument except those Flemish cnuts can a) brew good beer and b) cook meat very well

Very true.

It always amuses me when the cafes and small bistro restaurants, advertise in the window that they serve Welsh and, separately, ‘Thick Welsh’.

It’s heart attack on a plate but, like its Welsh / English equivalent, it’s very good.

Day two

270 miles St Omer to Simmerath

I’ve rejigged today’s route, to all but miss out the motorway between St Omer and Cambrai.

I now rejoin it only to miss out Arras, which can get very snarled up, even on the ring road.

I chose Simmerath as my base for the next few days, simply as it’s conveniently placed for the sites I want to visit. It’s a decent enough sized smallish and not unattractive town, so it’ll probably have a bar or two for me to try out.

I love a good travelogue!
Seems a shame to have to put a UK sticker on your plate when your registration number says it all anyway.
A good first day Richard, looking good!

432 miles today Richard ?

Having decided to forego the motorway until I got to Arras, I set off at 07:15.

The sun was doing its best to break through, meaning that I was somewhat fresh in a thin T-shirt and mesh suit.

The roads rolled by, empty of traffic, the Himalayan trundling along at a steady 60 to 65, almost silently,

On past St Pol (scene of me nearly being crushed, several years ago) and on until Arras came into sight. As I expected the traffic into Arras or hunting for the motorways was heavy, mixed in with farm lorries, all shifting grain and bales.

Onto the motorway for 14 miles, before exiting at the old favourite, junction 8 at Cambrai. Then it’s onto the ring road and off towards a coffee stop at a cafe I know well in Inchy. The owner greeted me like a long lost friend and I shook hands with all the locals, in the cafe for their morning heart starters. What else to do at 09:30 on a Thursday morning?

The cafe is next door to a pretty good bakery, so I nipped in to buy a water and a bacon and cheese baguette for lunch:
