Having read about the terrible attrition of the American forces, I thought it would be interesting to see and, not least, stand on the spots where the events unfolded.

I see you are, I think, in Colorado? I find it interesting to look at pictures like this:



And try to imagine where the men in the picture came from and what their professions might have been before they were very probably conscripted into the American army to fight and (very possibly) die in a dreadful forest, thousands of miles away from home. Very possibly many of them might not have been beyond their town or city, let alone State, before being called upon to ship out to Europe to fight to liberate it. A strange and very dangerous world it must have been for them all. They are all very possibly now dead (age having overtaken them) but their endeavours live on in the pictures.

I have bought the above book from an earlier thread Richard had posted.
And visited the area after reading his postings..

I can thoroughly recommend the book as informative and harrowing in the written narrative..
I am now on the second reading of it..it doesn't all sink in the first time..
