Hi all, looking at going to he Dolomites later this year. I've searched here and found loads of routes for when I get there, what I could do with is a good route to get there and back.
I'd like to make the journey from Calais and back part of the holiday, I think 3 days each way should suffice? The usual stuff, scenery, good, fast roads etc etc, some motorway if absolutely necessary.
Any help/advice/GPX files would be appreciated from those who've 'been there done that', the wife will be on the back so need to keep her interested, which makes my life easier!!

=====

Moved from Trip Reports.

Richard

PS Also includes GPX files of suggested routes, ways to get there and stuff. Titled edited.

Yes. Doable (from London) in 2. But why rush.

This is one of my trips (this should be just pre-Covid) down to Italy.
On the way back, waved goodbye to my friends near Cortina and headed north: Austria, then stop in Germany and back to London the day after.
Relatively flowing/fast-ish route, but pleasant. Mix of motorways and a/b-roads.

The route we took went down through Belgium & Lux to Saarbrucken on day 1 using mostly toll free motorway or dual carriageway. Then cut across the NE corner of the Black Forest to Kempten in Bavaria on nicer roads. Then pick a route across Austria to put you in the part of the Dolomites you want.

To return we stopped in Nauders on the CH/A/I triple point. Up the east side of Lake Constance and across the Black Forest to Kaysersberg in Alsace. Then near St Quentin.

No town to aim at yet, all very flexible. Cheers for the help so far. I’ve read some of you are very well travelled, you’ve probably done the trip a few times, so can link up the best routes. This where I’ve struggled on previous Euro trips for the first time, the more I do it the better the route becomes, would just be so much nicer without the trial and error!

I can drop the Italian-German-French section as a GPX file tomorrow. You can use it as reference.
I remember the German section was pleasant, I think part goes around the black forest. I probably also have some videos of the road... I can add that to my mind-numbing "route samples" videos on YouTube :D

Yes, that would be useful, please do.

I think I've sorted something, as to whether it's any good or not is another matter!!

Day 1 Calais to Montherme, looks a nice town.
Day 2 to Baden Baden, sets us up for the B500, may as well do it whilst there.
Day 3 to Bormio, not quite where I wanted but, getting further east made it too big a day, we can travel that way after a day off. Hopefully the links below work, first time I've used MyRoute, I use another App called Scenic.

looks good but of course, later in the year you can take the Fluela Pass rather than the motorail from Davos.

I think the Fluela Benjamin pass is in there, should have 6-7 days exploring the area for passes etc.

as the pass is currently shut, MRA has put you on the train. You might want to make sure it readjusts to roads when you upload the route to your navigation device for the actual trip

Here's my return above:

Pretty direct (1.5 days), so a fair amount of motorway now that I looked back at it.

Myself and @Stevie4scoops did a Dolly trip last autumn, 9 days - D1 out via Chunnel to Bitburg(DE), D2 to Colmar(FR), D3 to Oberamagau(DE), D4 to Arabba(IT), D5 local ridingArabba(IT), D6 to Dornbirn (AT), D7 to Nancy(FR), D8 to Rouen(FR), D9 to Caen/Portsmouth, home.

We barely touched motorways, real variety of places going there and coming back and loved a couple of days there. I have each day in MRA - happy to share if needed.

I’d be grateful if you could share your route, sounds interesting.

Why not share them in this thread, as it may well interest others, too.
