The latest issue of RiDE magazine has an article where they give samples of possible rides in three countries, Germany, Luxembourg and Iceland. The idea behind the article was to give their readers (some of whom might never have been beyond Tesco in Runcorn) some inspiration to go somewhere else.

It’s a lovely area and one I know well as it’s our “go to” riding area for weekends and short breaks. It’s about 3 hours ride from where I live and we are there probably 4-5 times a year. Great roads, not too busy unless you get down to the Mosel river. You can still find accomodation for around € 80-100 a night and decent local fare for about €15 per person. Beer is good and there is wine from the Mosel area close by. A lot to see as well as great riding. Castles, old towns with lovely old buildings. Obviously the closer to the Mosel the more touristy. We love the north western area of the Mosel which is where this area is. Know the roads shown above as have ridden them. Gerolstein is a lovely town with good places to stay.
The article is good and does the area justice.

For someone coming from the east of UK and is tight on time but has a bit more cash, the ferry from Harwich overnight saves time. Gets you down to the area on day 1, a days touring such as the route above on day 2 and then back on day 3. All non motorway except through Hollland which is an area to be avoided for biking at all costs…
Alternative is via the tunnel.

Anyone interested in more info am happy to help out with routes, ideas and places to stay but just remember I am not a big city or townie so the places we stay at tend to be in quieter locations.

Certainly, if someone was was travelling across from Yourkshire or Suffolk, Norfolk or Lincolnshire or even across from the Midlands, the Harwich / Hook of Holland crossing might well be the ‘best’ way to go. It’s then about 220 miles direct (fastest) route from the Dutch ferry terminal to say, Gerolstein, to use the example in post #1.

From London, Kent or Sussex, I’d guess the ‘best’ route is via the Chunnel, from where it’s about 260 miles to Gerolstein, using the fastest direct route.

Broadly speaking, it’s six and two threes, depending on where you start from, time and, not least, cost. Those in Cornwall, have got a longer treck.

Once you are there, indeed the whole of that part of Germany and / or into Luxembourg / Belgium opens up for you. You can’t go far wrong in any direction. Take a short break or spend longer, it’s pretty easy either way.

Just as an example. Here´s a link with some details on our last jaunt. We stayed on the Mosel river which was great. Excellent food for very reasonable prices and accommodation was good.
