Hola Compadres!

I'm looking for suggestions for good gravel roads/tracks in the Alps...

I'm doing the photography for the next book in Haynes Adventure Motorcycling series and needs some bike accessible (legal?) paths in the mountains ...

Any thoughts appreciated!

Greg

there are quite a few in france, a very good one is col de parpaillon .

in switzerland gravel access roads are very few and far between.

a decent one is at Saas Balen, cross the train tracks at the station and the road zig zags up the mountain side to the glacier.

You need a copy of 'GROSSER ALPEN STRASSEN FUHRER' published in German only by DENZEL ISBN 3-85047-763-0 it lists all the Passes , Colls etc in the Alps from France across to the Slovenian Alps including all the high passes that are just gravel tracks.
Mine is the 21st Edition and is 8 or 9 years old.
With a German dictionary , a few local maps and this guide you will find all the high passes .
They are quite often on E Bay Germany s/hand. and I think mine cost about £18 new in Austria but it is worth it.

There is an unmade section along Passo di Umbrail / Umbrail Pass - just off the back of the Stelvio Pass when i went along this section last September.

Of course there is the Colle de Sommelier which is the focal point of the Stella Alpina in July.

Just ride a bit further south... Morocco will give you more dirt roads than you can shake a water pipe at..... and nice exotic pictures... especially if the company is picking up the tab for you ;)

Thanks for the feedback ---

Morocco was the inspiration for vol.1, Iceland was vol.2, Vol. 3 is released in 3 weeks and my effort in vol.4 needs somewhere easy (and cheap because I'm picking up the tab!) to get to... Mountains inspire me especially if there's a rideable dirt track up to the top...

I'm actually committed to the Alps now, just need those suggestions for locations!

Cheers

Greg

In that case, it might be worth dropping a line to stevejazzyb on here who runs a guest house in Morzine. They weren't open last summer, but it might be worth having a chat.

Glad I looked at this thread; it's giving me great ideas for my holiday this summer.:thumb2 Colle del Finestre is defo on the list.

You can enter to this pass from north (Susa), there is small narrow asfalt road with sign that is not alout to go there, but we have seen on the way guard from national parc and we had no problems. South part (Sestriere) is flat slot with asfalt. I think solo you can go higher over the pass , there is gravel road somwhere to the top of one pick.
Regards

Dont forget Passo di Croce Domini. Great tarmack ride up to the little cafe on the top and then turn right and go down the gravel road towards lake Garda.
