I got my Zumo 550 out on monday for a 200 mile round trip.
It was dead, nothing.
I rang Garmin on tuesday, sent the Zumo back to them and received a new unit three days later.
Cost for a repair/replacement was £111, bargain, and swift service
The old unit was registered in 2007 !
Happy days

I fail to see what's great about that. You clearly don't recall destroying the old one, so why is forking out over a hundred quid 5 years after spending nearly £500 worthy of public praise?

Not trying to poke holes here, but my very well cared for 550 died after just three years, and chose to do so a couple of days into a trip I'd spent several years planning. I bought a 660 en route, and Garmin wouldn't even transfer the 550's lifetime maps subscription as a gesture of goodwill, inviting me instead to get the 'older' unit fixed at cost.

I bought the 660 last year, so going on averages it should be dead by next August. Probably halfway through a trip.

Well I guess I could have forked out a bit more than £111 for a 660 after only 3 years of well cared for use !
My Zumo died after it fell out of my helmet and landed on the road, after 7 years of fairly carefully use
How did you destroy yours?
Oh yes I would just put your dodgy 660 on eBay and buy a TomTom before you start your trip

Thankfully your 'averages' aren't the same as the rest of us!

To help your average feel better... I've had a 660 since they came out and has been used nearly daily over that time in the stock Garmin mount.

:comfort

I will complain bitterly about their software as it sucks big time compared the current sw.

Now, if Google and Garmin can get in bed together, sorted.

I fail to see what's... blah blah blah

Blimey you sound a right bundle of fun...:blast talk about negative vibes..

I had a 550 for about four years, used it almost every day, eventually the screen stopped working, and a few other minor issues cropped up.

I did the same as Frisky, sent it back for repairs, and they sent me a brand new 660, boxed with everything needed to get going.... Plus, they had already registered it on the 'My Garmin' part of their website, and transferred my Lifetime NuMaps to the new unit.

I think that's very good service this day and age with a lot of companies adopting a 'couldn't care less' attitude to save a few bob... I've no Idea how good/bad Tom Tom are..

Fair comment. My 550's digitiser started playing up on day two of a trip I'd spent a long time planning, so it was either a case of trying to source local maps and seeing how much of my route I could remember or replacing the stricken unit on the road. Being short on time I went for the latter option.

Wish I knew - halfway through a ride near Digne (I think) the touch screen started to register phantom input; UI buttons would press themselves and then become unresponsive. Screen calibration didn't help, nor did a factory reset. I did some searching and apparently that's one of the known problems.

No thanks. I've used the TomTom Rider II for a number of years and while I think the mapping is clearer than Garmin I just can't do without the route planning software. Yes, there's TYRE, but it still feels like a bit of a cludge.

Very glad to hear it! :)

I'm very happy with the 660 and really hope it lasts longer than my 550. As for my 'averages' - I was referring to another post on this forum where somebody said that 3 years is about what you can expect from them, hence the good trade in spare parts on eBay. If that view is wrong and it's just sour grapes talking then fair enough, though I can see how that view may have developed.

Yeah, sorry, that did come across a bit off. I find it hard to get the tone right when posting on here these days, over the last few years the forum has changed quite a bit. :nenau

I'd have sent mine back too, but the fault happened right at the start of a trip and I'd invested a lot of time and effort in planning the routes. I did ask Garmin if they'd consider transferring the lifetime maps subscription to my shiny new 660, given how I'd just given them more money after the 550 died for no apparent reason, but they declined. (And no, I didn't exactly phrase it like that)

At the end of the day I'm glad to hear you got good service from Garmin. My experience doesn't exactly encourage me to grab the 770, or whatever it's gonna be.

Right - cue the smug comments from the printed-map-purists.

I've just had my Nav IV replaced at 11 months. Received on the Monday, new one back with me on Wednesday. That's not bad at all, especially as I got a free update from map 2013.10 to 2013.40 and they had already registered it to my account when I got it back. That's a nice touch. Pity it wasn't reliable in the first place though :/

Cheers
