Happy Green Leopard customer here :D

Had them a couple of years now and have had no problems with them at all :thumb2

Ditto that. As fitted by the very nice Fil Schiannini. However, in the interests of fairness can I mention that judge, purveyour of UE plugs, is an equally nice fellow and I'm sure his product is just as good. :thumb

whats the advantage of the silicone moulded type as opposed to disposable foam ones, from what I have read the foam type have a better noise reduction properties

Sorry Roddy, just saw this and noticed that no-one has replied.

The short(ish) answer is that a custom made plug will be more comfortable. There are two reasons for this, the first is that a foam plug relies on expanding inside your ear canal in order to stay in. A custom plug does not exert pressure inside your ear and so is more comfy. The second reason is to do with the fact that ear canals vary hugely in size and shape. Imagine squeezing 8mm of foam plug into a 3mm ear canal...

As for noise reduction - there is a minefield of often confusing information about this, but UE or GL plugs will block out enough noise to prevent your hearing sustaining permanent damage while riding a bike. That's really all you need to worry about....

... If you want to go into it further then remember that claims about noise reduction need to be looked at carefully. For example GL carry a SNR of 30. This means that the average reduction across the sound frequency range is 30 decibels. However, high frequencies are much easier to block so the number there goes up into the 40s (don't have exact figures to hand - but you get the idea). Low (bass) frequencies are harder to block and the number there is below 30. It can get confusing (very quickly) but make sure you are comparing the same number when looking at noise reduction.

Hope that helps :thumb2

been thinking of making my own for some time now in fact everytime i use a tube of silicone i am tempted to squeeze it into my ears you could fill both your ears right up and have the daddy of all ear plugs for minimal cost :thumb2 ,,,anyone else thought of doing this:nenau

As no one else seems to have picked up on this little ditty....Don't do it!!!...

You could cause all sorts of damage and even end up losing your hearing.

I know that the Green Leopard's are cheaper and have less reliability issues

Thanks in advance for any help

With the ability to get mouldings done elsewhere, it's a bit of a no-brainer then really isn't it ;)

Do a search on Green leopard and Ultimate ear on this board and see who has had what said about them too.....that will reveal a lot as well ;)
(I've had UE ones and wouldn't deal with them again)

Ps Sorry judgeypoos :kissy2

As the OP requested no further sales pitch from UE or GL I am merely an observer on this thread and whichever way he goes I'll lose no sleep either way.

Never even corrected his facts on GL's allegedly being cheaper :augie

He has had replies to both his PM's though :thumb

If you are though serious about doing it grab a bargain bundle of silicon tubes from B&Q as it sounds like there's a rather large void to fill between your two ears

Nah, expanding foam would be much better, you'll need less and can easily trim it to shape:thumb2

Ultimate Ear

I had some UE monitors re-made at the NEC this January as some thieving sod nicked my original set.:mad:

The new set came back with the moulded cable protection which is far more robust.

During the Morccan Dash the left plug split and the inner tube became exposed scratching the inside of my ear. This was very painful after a few hours riding and I had to resort to a penknife and butchering the plug.

I contacted Judge and was advised to return them for repair. (One end of the split was still visible)

They have just come back all fixed, no charge and are a perfect fit, as before. I could not ask for better than that especially after I had resorted to the knife! I was also sent regular updates from UE on the progress of the repair.:thumb2:thumb2

So - despite, or maybe because of, some of the comments on this site and others, I think they have upped their game at UE and i would definitely recommend them.

I have UE monitors too

Pro- for me excellent fit, superb noise insulation (no decent conversation possible with them in the ear), great sound

Against - none really except the bloody non communication from UE. i butchered mine up over what in the end was a fault within the mini jack plug, cost me an additional PDS 60 plus postage (had to sent them back twice!!). You can call as much as you want, you won't get further the the phonedesk. I asked specifically for an engineer to call/e-mail me back - never happened. I've sent plenty of e-mails with multimeter measurements, - no response. "Repaired" once, got them back with still exactly the same problem.
Dave - if you see this step up your customer response. I wasted PDS 60 over a mini jack problem your people indentifed wrongly. My monitors are now at PDS 235. I won't be buying from UE again w/o commecial gesture
